The Windows key is a useful feature in Windows 10 that allows you to open the Start menu, access shortcuts and switch between windows quickly. However, if your Windows key is not working, it can be frustrating. In this article, we will discuss some troubleshooting steps that you can take to fix the issue.

  1. Check for Physical Issues

The first and easiest step is to check for any physical issues with the Windows key. Sometimes, the key might be stuck or not functioning due to accumulated dust or debris. Try cleaning the key using a can of compressed air or a soft brush.

  1. Restart Your Computer

Restarting the computer is a simple yet effective step that can fix many Windows related issues, including the Windows key. Restarting the computer clears the system memory and reloads all the drivers, which might have stopped working due to a glitch.

  1. Check Keyboard Drivers

The Windows key not working could be due to outdated or corrupted keyboard drivers. To check if this is the case, open the Device Manager and expand the Keyboard section. If there is a yellow exclamation mark beside the keyboard, it means that the drivers need to be updated. Right-click the keyboard driver and select Update Driver Software.

  1. Use the On-Screen Keyboard

If the issue is with your physical keyboard, you can try using the on-screen keyboard to access the Windows key. The On-Screen Keyboard can be accessed by going to Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard > Toggle on “Use On-Screen Keyboard.”

  1. SFC Scan

Sometimes, corrupted system files can cause issues with the Windows key. Performing an SFC scan will check the integrity of system files and repair any corrupt files. Open Command Prompt as an Administrator and type “sfc /scannow” command and press Enter. Wait for the process to complete and restart your computer.

  1. Check for Malware or Virus

Malware or virus infections can cause issues with the Windows key. Use your antivirus software to scan your computer for any infections. Ensure that the antivirus software is up to date and has the latest virus definitions.

  1. Reset Your Computer

If none of the above solutions worked, resetting your computer might fix the issue. Open the Settings app and go to Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC. Select the Keep my files option and proceed with the reset process.

Conclusion

The Windows key is a key feature in Windows 10, and it can be frustrating when it stops working correctly. However, there are several troubleshooting steps that you can take to fix the issue. Cleaning the keyboard, restarting the computer, updating drivers, and performing an SFC scan are just a few of the steps you can take. If all else fails, resetting your computer is the last resort to fix the Windows key issue.
