If you’re a Windows 10 user, you may encounter the black screen of death error at some point. This error occurs when your computer’s operating system crashes, resulting in a black screen that prevents you from accessing your system files and applications. While the black screen of death error can be alarming, don’t panic. There are several ways to troubleshoot the issue and fix the error. Here’s how:

Reset your computer’s power source

The black screen of death error may be caused by a power glitch in your computer. To fix this error, start by turning off your computer and unplug it from the power source. Leave it unplugged for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This should reset the power source and hopefully, fix the black screen of death error.

Run a System Restore

If resetting the power source doesn’t work, try running a System Restore. A System Restore will revert your computer back to an earlier configuration, which may solve the problem. Follow these steps:

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the task manager.

2. In the task manager, click on File > Run new task.

3. In the next window, type “rstrui” and press Enter.

4. The System Restore window will appear. Click Next.

5. Choose a restore point from before the black screen of death error occurred, then click Next.

6. Follow the prompts to complete the System Restore process.

Update your graphics driver

A faulty graphics driver can cause the black screen of death error. To fix this error, update your graphics driver by following these steps:

1. Press Windows Key + X to bring up the Quick Link menu.

2. Click on Device Manager.

3. Expand the Display Adapters section.

4. Right-click on your graphics driver and click on Update Driver.

5. Select the option to “Search automatically for updated driver software”.

6. Follow the prompts to install the latest driver.

Run a clean boot

The black screen of death error may be caused by a conflict between your computer’s startup programs. To fix this error, try performing a clean boot. A clean boot will stop unnecessary programs from starting up during the system boot process. Here’s how:

1. Press Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog box.

2. In the Run dialog box, type “msconfig” and press Enter.

3. In the System Configuration window, click on the Services tab.

4. Check the box for “Hide all Microsoft services”.

5. Click on Disable all.

6. Go back to the Start tab and click on Open Task Manager.

7. In the Task Manager, disable all startup programs.

8. Restart your computer and see if the black screen of death error is resolved.
