How to Felt a Pool Table

Introduction:

Felt, also known as pool table cloth, is an essential component of any pool table. Over time, it becomes worn out due to continuous use, accumulating chalk and dirt and eventually affecting play quality. This article will guide you step-by-step through the process of re-felting a pool table to ensure you have a smooth playing surface once again.

Step 1: Gather Necessary Materials

First, gather all the necessary items required for this task. These include:

– Replacement pool table felt

– Razor blade or rotary cutter

– Pencil

– Staple gun with staples (for traditional wooden pool tables) or adhesive (for modern pool tables with rails)

– Measuring tape

– Straight edge or ruler

– Pool table brush or vacuum cleaner

Step 2: Remove Old Felt

Start by removing the rails and pockets from your pool table. Carefully lift the existing felt off of the table surface, using a razor blade or rotary cutter to trim away any excess material. Be cautious not to damage the slate underneath.

Step 3: Clean the Slate

Once the old felt has been removed, clean the slate using a brush or vacuum cleaner to remove any dust, chalk residue, or debris. Ensure that the surface is completely clean and smooth before applying new felt.

Step 4: Measure and Cut New Felt

Lay out your replacement felt on a flat surface and measure it carefully. Use a pencil to trace around your pool table’s edges, ensuring you leave enough material for stapling or gluing underneath the rails. Then use a straight edge to make precise cuts.

Step 5: Place and Stretch New Felt

Center the new felt on top of your cleaned slate. Begin at one end of the table and work your way towards the opposite side, gently pulling and stretching the felt. Make sure there are no wrinkles or bubbles, and keep the felt tight.

Step 6: Secure the Felt

For a traditional pool table, use a staple gun to secure the new felt in place. Staple approximately every two inches around the perimeter of the pool table, working consistently from one side to another. For modern pool tables with rails, apply adhesive instead.

Step 7: Trim Excess Felt

Using a razor blade or rotary cutter, carefully trim away any excess felt that extends beyond your stapling or gluing area. Make sure not to cut too close, leaving enough material to secure the felt in place.

Step 8: Reattach Rails and Pockets

Once the new felt is securely in place and trimmed, reattach your pool table’s rails and pockets. Ensure all parts are firmly secured and properly aligned.

Step 9: Brush the New Felt

Lastly, gently brush your newly installed felt using a pool table brush or vacuum cleaner. This removes any dust or lint and ensures that your playing surface is smooth.

Conclusion:

Re-felting your pool table can be a rewarding DIY project that breathes new life into your game. By following these steps carefully, you’ll have a smooth playing surface that will last for years to come. Enjoy your rejuvenated pool table and happy gaming!
