How to Face Paint a Butterfly
Face painting is a popular activity at parties, carnivals, and other events where kids and even adults can tap into their creative side. One of the most common and beloved designs is the butterfly. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to face paint a butterfly, ensuring you have a beautiful and eye-catching creation
Materials Needed:
1. Face paint in multiple colors (choose colors for the butterfly wings, and an additional color for outlining)
2. Thin paintbrush for details
3. Sponge applicator or wide brush for larger areas
4. Cup of water
5. Paper towels
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare your canvas
Make sure the person getting their face painted has clean, dry skin. This will make it easier for the face paint to adhere to the skin and create smoother lines. If necessary, gently wash the face prior to painting, avoiding any irritating products.
Step 2: Sketch out the design
Using a light-colored face paint and a thin brush, sketch out the shape of the butterfly wings on each side of the cheeks and eyelids. This will serve as a guide when filling in with more vibrant colors later on.
Step 3: Apply base color
Select your desired base color for the butterfly wings. Using a sponge applicator or wide brush, apply this color within the outlines you have drawn on both sides of the face. Be sure to cover all areas within these borders evenly.
Step 4: Add detail with secondary color(s)
Choose one or more secondary colors to add depth and detail to your butterfly wings. Using your thin brush or sponge applicator, apply small amounts of these colors within each wing’s space, blending them into the base color as desired. Consider adding spots, stripes or any patterns that you find appealing.
Step 5: Create butterfly body
To achieve realistic results, you will need to paint a butterfly body connecting the wings. Using the same thin brush, paint a vertical line starting from the bridge of the nose, down to the tip. Then, create a small oval shape for the head directly above this line and two small rectangles below it for the thorax and abdomen.
Step 6: Outline and finish details
With a contrasting color and your thin brush, carefully outline the perimeter of each wing, creating clear divisions between them. You can also use this color to add more intricate design elements like swirls, dots or other patterns inside the wings. To finish, gently outline the butterfly’s body as well.
Step 7: Allow to dry
Ask your subject to keep their eyes closed and remain still for a few minutes while the face paint dries completely. Once dry, they are free to open their eyes and reveal their beautiful face-painted butterfly creation!
Following these steps will help you master the art of face painting butterflies. With a bit of practice, you will be able to create stunning, unique designs that are sure to impress at any event.
