How to Exercise Your Eyes: 9 Steps
Your eyes need exercise just like the rest of your body. Over time, our eyes can become strained and overworked from daily activities such as staring at screens, reading up close, or even general wear and tear. By practicing a few simple eye exercises daily, you can help maintain or improve your vision and overall eye health. Here are nine steps to exercise your eyes effectively:
1. Blinking – This simple act helps to reduce eye strain and keep the eyes moist. Set aside a minute every hour to practice conscious, slow blinking by closing your eyes gently for around 2-3 seconds each time before opening them again.
2. Palming – Close your eyes and place your cupped hands over them without applying pressure. The heat from your hands will soothe and relax tired eye muscles. Do this for 1-2 minutes every few hours during the day.
3. Eye rolling – Sit comfortably and circle your eyes clockwise using only your eye movements – first slowly and then gradually increase speed. Do this for 10 repetitions before changing direction to counter-clockwise.
4. Focusing near and far – Hold an object, such as a pen, at arm’s length in front of you. Focus on it for a few seconds before shifting focus to a distant point like a wall or window for another few seconds. Repeat 10 times.
5. The “20-20-20” rule – Every 20 minutes while working on a computer or doing close-up work, look at something approximately 20 feet away for 20 seconds to help avoid eye strain.
6. Figure-eight tracing – Focus on an imaginary figure eight in front of you, about three meters away from where you’re sitting. Trace the figure with just your eyes while moving them in a steady rhythm for 30 seconds.
7. Flexing – Close one eye while focusing on an object that’s about one to two meters away from your face. Move your arm smoothly in a semi-circle with the object still in focus. Switch eyes and repeat up to 10 times.
8. Directional blinking – Close one eye and, using the other, blink rapidly for 10 times while looking upward, then downward. Repeat on the other eye and do this three times a day.
9. Eyelid massage – Gently press your fingers on your closed eyelids, moving them in a circular motion for a gentle massage. This helps increase blood flow and promotes eye relaxation.
Incorporating these simple eye exercises into your daily life can help keep your eyes healthy and functioning properly. Be sure to take regular breaks during the day if you’re involved in extensive screen time or other tasks that require sustained close-up focus on fine details. And as always, consult an optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination if you experience any persistent vision issues or discomfort.
