How to Draw Simple Sketches: 13 Steps

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have a sketchbook or a suitable surface, and your sketching tools such as pencils, erasers, and a sharpener. Choose a comfortable location with good lighting where you can work.

Step 2: Warm-up

Start by warming up your hand and mind with some simple doodles or lines. This will help you get into the right mindset for sketching and loosen up your hand.

Step 3: Observe and Visualize

Look at your subject, whether it be an object or an idea in your head. Spend some time visualizing it in its simplest form and plan out the main shapes that make up the image. Break down complex subjects into basic shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, or triangles.

Step 4: Begin with Light Lines

Using a light touch on the paper or surface, begin to draw the basic shapes you observed in Step 3. These lines will be the skeleton of your drawing and can be erased later if necessary.

Step 5: Connect the Shapes

Start connecting each basic shape to create the outline of your subject. Use long, confident strokes as this will make your drawing look more polished.

Step 6: Add Details

Now that you have laid out the foundation of your sketch, start adding details like textures, patterns, shadows, or highlights. Remember that less is more when it comes to sketching; keep it simple and avoid going overboard with detail.

Step 7: Refine Your Sketch

Evaluate your sketch to see if there are areas that need some adjustments. Use an eraser to remove any unnecessary lines or to lighten them if they are too heavy. Keep refining until you are happy with your sketch.

Step 8: Add Contrast

To give depth and dimension to your drawing, add contrast by darkening shadow areas and leaving highlights light. You can also use cross-hatching, stippling, or shading techniques to achieve this effect.

Step 9: Clean Up Your Sketch

Once you are happy with your sketch, use an eraser to remove any remaining light lines or smudges. This will clean up your drawing and give it a professional look.

Step 10: Learn from Mistakes

No sketch is perfect, so take the time to reflect on what you’ve learned during the process and how you can improve for future drawings.

Step 11: Practice Regularly

Like any skill, sketching requires practice to improve. Sketch regularly, both from life and imagination, to make this a habit.

Step 12: Seek Inspiration

Expand your creativity by seeking out inspiration from other artists, books, photographs, or nature itself. Observing and learning from different sources will help you develop your own artistic style.

Step 13: Share Your Work

Lastly, don’t be afraid to share your sketches with others for feedback or encouragement. By sharing your work, you open yourself up to new perspectives and helpful critiques that can further improve your skills.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
