How to Draw an Hourglass: 15 Steps

Step 1: Draw a vertical line

Begin by drawing a vertical line in the center of your page. This line serves as a guide for the hourglass shape.

Step 2: Sketch two parallel horizontal lines

Draw two parallel horizontal lines (one at the top and another at the bottom) on either side of the vertical line. These lines will work as the top and bottom sides of your hourglass.

Step 3: Connect the horizontal lines with diagonal lines

Draw diagonal lines connecting the ends of the two horizontal lines to create an elongated diamond shape, which represents the outline of the hourglass.

Step 4: Divide the diamond shape into two triangles

Draw another horizontal line in the middle, connecting both diagonal lines, effectively dividing your hourglass into two triangles.

Step 5: Draw outlines for top and bottom platforms

On both ends of your hourglass, draw small rectangles as wide as the horizontal lines. These rectangles represent the platforms holding up each section of your hourglass.

Step 6: Add depth to platforms

To add depth to each platform, draw short diagonal lines from each corner, followed by a horizontal line connecting both diagonal lines.

Step 7: Create supporting columns

Draw vertical lines within each rectangle to create supporting columns for your hourglass. Add curved or decorative elements if desired.

Step 8: Outline hourglass frame

Sketch two additional smaller elongated diamonds parallel to your original diamond shape inside it. This represents the depth of your hourglass frame.

Step 9: Define the vessel’s curves

Connect all four points where your smaller diamonds intersect with subtle curves. These curves represent where glass connects to your hourglass frame.

Step 10: Add flowing sand

Using curving zig-zag or wavy lines inside the lower triangle, depict sand flowing down to fill it up.

Step 11: Illustrate the top section’s sand

Draw an uneven, wavy line inside your upper triangle to represent the remaining sand in the top part

Step 12: Add shadow effects

Using softer lines and shading, create a shadow effect on the edge opposite to your light source. This adds depth and realism to your drawing.

Step 13: Define glass material

Add simple reflections on the glass areas by sketching a few short, straight lines or curved lines, depending on the light source.

Step 14: Add more details

Consider adding wood grain texture or metallic finish lines to the platforms and columns for a more realistic drawing.

Step 15: Finalize your drawing

Finish your hourglass by going over your outlines with darker, cleaner lines, and finalize any shading or details as necessary. That’s it! You’ve successfully drawn an hourglass in 15 steps.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
