How to Do a Fireman’s Carry: 10 Steps

A fireman’s carry is an essential technique used by emergency responders and is useful for anyone who may need to transport an incapacitated person in a crisis situation. This lift allows an individual to carry another person efficiently while minimizing strain on the carrier’s body. Follow these ten steps to execute a fireman’s carry correctly and safely.

1. Assess the situation: Before attempting a fireman’s carry, ensure that the person you intend to carry is not suffering from serious injuries, such as a spinal injury, which may worsen with movement.

2. Communicate (if possible): If the person is conscious, let them know your intentions and ask for their cooperation when performing the lift.

3. Position yourself: Stand parallel next to the individual, with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent.

4. Secure their arm: Reach across their body and grab the wrist of their farthest arm, pulling it across their chest.

5. Lower your center of gravity: Squat down, keeping your back straight and engaging your core muscles. Avoid bending from the waist or rounding your back as this increases the risk of injury.

6. Roll them onto your shoulders: Slide your nearest shoulder under their midsection while holding onto their wrist, then stand up using your legs’ strength and shift their weight up and over your shoulders.

7. Secure their legs: With one hand still holding their wrist, use your free hand to lift their nearest leg by grabbing just above the knee and pulling it up over your shoulder.

8. Distribute weight evenly: Make sure the person’s weight is evenly distributed on both sides of your body. This balance allows for easier transportation and minimizes strain on your body.

9. Stabilize: Ensure that you have a secure grip on both the wrist and leg before attempting to move forward.

10. Proceed with caution: Start walking with the person on your shoulders, taking slow and steady steps, making sure to keep your balance and being aware of your surroundings.

Remember that practice makes perfect. Performing a fireman’s carry efficiently requires regular practice to develop strength and master the technique. Be sure to practice with a partner under safe conditions before attempting a fireman’s carry during an emergency.
