Social media platforms have become an essential part of our lives. We access them for updates on what is happening around us, and for news from our friends and family. However, with the introduction of algorithmic feeds, our social media timelines have changed. Instead of seeing posts in chronological order, we are now shown posts that the algorithm thinks we will like. This feature can be helpful, but it also has some downsides. Here’s how to disable the algorithmic feeds on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Twitter

Twitter was one of the first social media platforms to implement an algorithmic feed. Since then, the company has made it possible for its users to switch back to a chronological timeline. To do so:

Go to your Twitter profile

Select Settings and privacy

Select Content preferences

Select Timeline and scrolling

Uncheck the box for “Show me the best Tweets first”.

Instagram

Instagram also uses an algorithmic feed to show its users’ content. The platform has made it difficult to switch back to a chronological timeline, but there are still ways to disable the algorithm. Although this doesn’t provide a perfect chronological feed, it will help to show more recent posts.

Go to your Instagram profile

Tap the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner

Select Settings

Select Account

Select Posts You’ve Liked

Facebook

Facebook has even more complicated algorithmic feeds. It uses several factors to decide which posts to show you, including the relevance score and post popularity. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely disable the algorithm on Facebook, but there is a way to make it less prominent.

Go to your Facebook profile

Click the down arrow in the top-right corner

Select News Feed Preferences

Select Prioritize who to see first.
