Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that has been through a process to make it stronger and more resistant to breakage. It’s used in various applications, such as shower doors, tabletops, and automotive windows. Cutting tempered glass is a delicate process requiring precision and care. Follow these 12 steps to successfully cut tempered glass.

1. Gather materials: You will need a glass cutter, cutting oil, a straightedge or ruler, gloves, safety goggles, lint-free cloth, and fine-grit sandpaper.

2. Inspect the glass: Examine the tempered glass for any cracks or chips. Do not attempt to cut damaged tempered glass as it can shatter unpredictably.

3. Clean the glass: Wipe down the surface with a lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris.

4. Mark the cut line: Using a non-permanent marker or grease pencil, draw the line where you want to cut the tempered glass.

5. Apply cutting oil: Dab some cutting oil onto the glass cutter wheel to ensure smooth and even scoring.

6. Align the straightedge: Place your straightedge or ruler alongside the marked line on your tempered glass piece.

7. Score the glass: Firmly press the glass cutter wheel against the surface of the tempered glass and move it along your marked line in one continuous motion with even pressure throughout.

8. Apply pressure: On one side of the scored line, apply gentle downward pressure without rocking or twisting motions. This helps create an even break along your scoreline.

9. Tap with a ball-peen hammer: Carefully tap along your scoreline using a ball-peen hammer to weaken the material further before breaking it apart completely.

10. Break along scoreline: Hold the tempered glass with both hands — one on each side of your scoreline — and apply gentle, even pressure until it breaks along the scored line.

11. Sand the edges: Using fine-grit sandpaper, carefully smooth out any rough or sharp edges on your newly cut tempered glass piece.

12. Clean up: Wipe your work surface clean and dispose of the broken glass shards properly to avoid any injuries.

Remember that cutting tempered glass requires patience, practice, and the right tools. Always make safety a priority by wearing protective gear and working in a well-ventilated area. With these steps, you can confidently cut tempered glass for your next project.
