How to Cut Face Framing Layers

The perfect face framing layers can accentuate your features and give your hairstyle a fresh, updated look. Whether you are a professional stylist or an enthusiast looking to try it at home, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cut these lovely layers.

1. Prep your hair

Start with clean, dry hair. Make sure it’s detangled and smooth. If your hair is curly or wavy, you may want to straighten it before cutting for better accuracy.

2. Section your hair

Divide your hair into three main sections: the top/front area (from temple-to-temple), the middle section (covering the crown of the head), and the bottom/nape area. Clip each section securely to keep them separate.

3. Establish guide length

Grab a small subsection of hair from the front/top section near your parting line. Determine the desired length of your shortest layer, which will be your guide. Hold the hair tightly between your index and middle fingers at a 90-degree angle from your face and make a clean, precise cut.

4. Cut initial layers

Using the guide length, begin cutting vertical sections down towards your face using that initial cut as a reference point for all other cuts in this area. To create a smooth transition, avoid pulling hair too far away from its natural fall when cutting.

5. Blend side layers

Move on to the sides by releasing the middle section around both temples, leaving only the bottom/nape section clipped up. Starting near your ears, hold subsections of hair at a diagonal angle and cut in a downward direction to create side layers that naturally blend with face framing layers.

6. Check for symmetry

As you work from one side of your head to the other, continually check that both sides are even and symmetrical in length and style.

7. Refine layers

To reduce the weight and give layers a softer appearance, use thinning shears to lightly trim the ends of each layer. This will create a more seamless blend between shorter and longer lengths.

8. Style your layers

Once you’ve finished cutting, style your hair as desired. Blow-dry, straighten or curl to enhance the new face framing layers.

9. Regular maintenance

Maintain your face framing layers every 6-8 weeks for a consistently polished look.

By following these steps, you can achieve flattering face framing layers that make your hairstyle come alive. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different layer lengths to tailor the look to suit your unique profile and personal style.
