Creating a desktop shortcut on your Windows computer can be a convenient way to access your favorite programs or files quickly. Whether it’s a frequently used application, a frequently visited website or a frequently used file, a desktop shortcut can save you time and effort. In this article, we will guide you through the process of creating a desktop shortcut on Windows.

Step 1: Select the file or program you want to create a shortcut for

First, you need to find the file or program you want to create a shortcut for. You can do this by opening the Start menu and searching for the file or program, or by navigating to the location where the file is stored on your computer.

Step 2: Right-click the file or program and select “Create Shortcut”

Once you have located the file or program, right-click on it and select “Create Shortcut” from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can also select the file or program and press “Ctrl + C” to copy it, and then right-click on your desktop and select “Paste shortcut”.

Step 3: Rename the shortcut

By default, the shortcut will have the same name as the original file or program. You can rename the shortcut by right-clicking on it and selecting “Rename”. Enter a new name for the shortcut that will help you easily identify it on your desktop.

Step 4: Move the shortcut to a desired location

Once you have created the shortcut and renamed it, you can move it to any location on your desktop. Simply click and drag the shortcut to the desired location and release the mouse button.

Step 5: Customize the shortcut’s properties (optional)

If you want to customize the shortcut’s properties, such as its icon or target location, you can do so by right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting “Properties”. From here, you can change the icon by clicking the “Change Icon” button, or change the target location by editing the “Target” field.

In conclusion, creating desktop shortcuts is a simple and effective way to access frequently used programs or files on your Windows computer. By following these five easy steps, you can create customized desktop shortcuts in just a few minutes.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
