How to Convert Excel to Google Sheets

As we move further into the digital age, the ability to access and edit documents across multiple devices has become a necessity. For spreadsheet users, this often means converting from the traditional Microsoft Excel format to Google Sheets, which offers more flexibility for collaboration and access across devices. Whether you’re looking to work on your spreadsheets via a web browser or simply need an easier way to share and collaborate with others, here is how you can convert your Excel files into Google Sheets.
Step 1: Open Google Drive
Start by navigating to your Google Drive. If you don’t have a Google account, you’ll need to create one. Once in Google Drive, look to the left-hand side panel and click on the “New” button.
Step 2: Upload Your Excel File
After clicking “New,” select “File upload.” Then, find the Excel file (.xlsx or .xls) on your computer that you wish to convert and upload it to your Google Drive.
Step 3: Convert the Excel File to Google Sheets
Once your file is uploaded, right-click on it in your Google Drive. In the drop-down menu that appears, go over “Open with,” then choose “Google Sheets.” This will open a new tab in your browser with your spreadsheet now in Google Sheets format.
Alternatively, after uploading the file without opening it, you can click once on the file and select “Open with” from the top menu in Google Drive. Then choose “Google Sheets” which will achieve the same result as right-clicking.
Step 4: Save as Google Sheets
After opening with Google Sheets, go to “File” in the menu bar of the newly opened sheet. Scroll down and click on “Save as Google Sheets.” This will create a version of your spreadsheet that is fully editable within Google Sheets.
Step 5: Organize Your Files
You may want to keep things organized within your Google Drive by renaming or moving your new Google Sheet file. To rename it, just right-click on the file and select “Rename.” To move it to a different folder within your drive, you can drag it into the desired destination or right-click and select “Move.”
You should now have successfully converted an Excel spreadsheet into Google Sheets format and be ready to take full advantage of all features that come with using cloud-based applications, including real-time collaboration and accessibility from any device with an internet connection.
Remember that some complex Excel functions might not be supported or may behave differently in Google Sheets. Therefore, after conversion, it’s always a good idea to check that everything functions as expected.
By following these simple steps anyone can convert their Excel files into a more flexible, shareable format using Google’s powerful cloud-based tools.
