Cleaning your nostrils is an essential part of maintaining good nasal hygiene and preventing respiratory issues. Regular cleaning can help reduce the build-up of bacteria, allergens, and dust particles in your nose. Follow these 13 steps to keep your nostrils clean and healthy.

1. Wash your hands: Always start by washing your hands with soap and water to prevent introducing new bacteria or viruses into your nostrils.

2. Stand over a sink: Position yourself over a sink or basin so that any expelled mucus or water can be quickly washed away.

3. Blow your nose gently: Before cleaning your nostrils, blow your nose gently to remove any loose debris or mucus.

4. Use saline solution: Purchase or prepare a saline solution by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt in 8 ounces of warm distilled or sterilized water.

5. Fill a bulb syringe: Using a clean bulb syringe, squeeze out the air and draw in the lukewarm saline solution.

6. Lean forward slightly: Tilt your head forward at approximately a 45-degree angle to avoid water entering the eustachian tubes and throat.

7. Insert the syringe tip: Place the tip of the bulb syringe into one nostril, taking care not to insert too deep.

8. Squeeze the bulb syringe slowly: Gently squeeze the bulb syringe to release the saline solution into your nostril, allowing it to flow through and loosen any debris inside.

9. Exhale through your other nostril: While maintaining pressure on the syringe, gently exhale through the opposite nostril to help expel any mucus or debris.

10. Repeat with the other side: Clear both nostrils by repeating steps 6-9 with the opposite nostril.

11. Rinse with fresh water: To remove any residual saline solution, rinse your nostrils gently with warm water.

12. Blow your nose gently again: After cleaning both nostrils, blow your nose one more time to expel any remaining mucus or debris.

13. Dry and sanitise: Use a clean tissue to dry your nostrils and dispose of it properly. Wash your hands thoroughly and sanitise the bulb syringe for future use.

Incorporating these steps into your daily or weekly routine ensures better nasal hygiene and may prevent congestion or sinus infections. If you struggle with chronic sinus issues or have concerns about your nasal health, consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
