Maintaining clean headlights is crucial for your safety and the overall appearance of your vehicle. Over time, headlights can become dirty, foggy, or yellowed due to oxidation and other environmental factors. In this article, we will guide you step by step on how to clean headlights effectively.

1. Gather necessary materials: To start with, you will need a bucket of water, car soap, microfiber cloths, masking tape, sandpaper (600, 1000, and 2000 grit), rubbing compound, a sponge/foam applicator, and a UV sealant.

2. Park in a shaded area: It is best to work on your headlights in a cooler environment as it prevents quick drying of soap and other cleaning products that could leave streaks or spots.

3. Wash the headlight area: Mix car soap with water and wash the headlight area with a sponge or cloth. This removes any dirt or debris that could cause scratches during the cleaning process.

4. Dry the headlight area: Use a microfiber cloth to dry the area thoroughly.

5. Apply masking tape: Cover the surrounding areas of the headlights with masking tape to protect your vehicle’s paint from any accidental damage during the cleaning process.

6. Wet-sanding process: Begin by soaking the 600-grit sandpaper in water for a few minutes. Then gently sand the headlight in horizontal strokes, keeping the surface wet at all times. This removes heavy oxidation.

7. Switch to 1000-grit sandpaper: After using the 600-grit sandpaper, rinse it off and switch to the 1000-grit sandpaper. Sand in vertical strokes this time around to get rid of any remaining deep scratches.

8. Finish with 2000-grit sandpaper: Following the same procedure as before but now using 2000-grit sandpaper, sand in horizontal strokes again to smoothen the headlight surface.

9. Rinse and dry: Thoroughly rinse your headlights and dry them with a microfiber cloth to remove any residue left from the sanding process.

10. Apply rubbing compound: Put some rubbing compound on a sponge or foam applicator and rub it onto the headlight using circular motions. This will further smooth the surface and remove any remaining haziness.

11. Rinse and dry again: After applying the rubbing compound, rinse off your headlights with water and dry them completely with a microfiber towel.

12. Apply UV sealant: To protect your headlights from future oxidation, apply a UV-resistant sealant following the manufacturer’s instructions. This may involve wiping it on and letting it dry or using a spray sealant.

13. Remove masking tape: Once the sealant is dry, carefully remove the masking tape from around the headlight area.

14. Admire your clean headlights: Ideally, your headlights should now appear clear and bright. If they still look foggy or discolored, repeat steps 6-13 as needed.

By following these 14 steps, you’ll ensure that your headlights are clean, clear, and safe for nighttime driving. Regular maintenance of your car’s headlights can greatly enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents on the road.
