How to Clean Espadrilles: 7 Steps

Espadrilles are a popular summer footwear choice, prized for their comfort and casual-chic style. However, keeping them clean can be a challenge. In this article, we will guide you through seven simple steps to clean your espadrilles and keep them looking fresh all season long.

Step 1: Remove Loose Dirt

Start by removing any loose dirt, mud, or debris from your espadrilles using a soft-bristled brush. Gently brush off the dirt, focusing on the canvas upper, the jute sole, and any other areas where dirt may collect.

Step 2: Mix a Cleaning Solution

Next, mix together a cleaning solution by combining equal parts water with a mild detergent, such as dish soap or laundry detergent. Avoid using bleach-based cleaners or harsh chemicals that may damage the fabric or jute materials.

Step 3: Spot Clean Stains

Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and gently dab at any stains on your espadrilles. Take care not to saturate the fabric or jute. For stubborn stains, you may need to repeat this step several times until the stain begins to lift.

Step 4: Wipe Down Entire Shoe

Once you’ve spot-cleaned any stains, dampen another clean cloth or sponge in the cleaning solution and gently wipe down the entire shoe, focusing on canvas areas and any other spots that may be soiled. Again, be sure not to over-saturate your shoes with liquid.

Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly

After cleaning your shoes, rinse them thoroughly with cold water to remove any soap residue. You can do this by using a wet cloth or sponge to gently dab away any remaining suds.

Step 6: Air Dry

It’s essential to let your espadrilles air dry to prevent shrinkage and maintain their shape. Place them in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, preferably where they can receive a gentle breeze. It’s also helpful to stuff your shoes with clean paper towels or tissue paper to help them retain their shape while drying.

Step 7: Optional – Deodorize

If your espadrilles have developed an unpleasant odor, you can sprinkle some baking soda inside the shoes and let them sit overnight. The baking soda will absorb any lingering odors and leave your shoes smelling fresh. In the morning, simply shake out the baking soda before wearing your espadrilles.

By following these seven steps, your espadrilles will stay clean and fresh throughout the summer months. Regular maintenance will not only prolong the life of your favorite footwear but will also keep you looking stylish and comfortable all season long.
