How To Choose The Best Neutral Paint Colors

Choosing the best neutral paint colors for any kind of lighting can be a game-changer in interior design. It’s all about creating the right mood and atmosphere in your space, regardless of whether it’s flooded with natural daylight or reliant on artificial lighting. Here’s how interior designers suggest you select the perfect neutral hue for your lighting conditions:

1. Consider the lighting direction:

North-facing rooms often get cool, indirect light, which can make them appear shadowy. For these spaces, opt for warm-based neutrals to counteract the coolness. South-facing rooms bathe in warm, direct light throughout the day; here, cooler neutrals can help balance the abundance of warmth.

2. Understand undertones:

Neutral paint colors are rarely just gray or beige; they have undertones that might be blue, green, taupe, or pink. These subtle hues can be amplified or muted depending on the light. Select a color with undertones that complement your room’s lighting; this is pivotal for achieving the desired ambiance.

3. Test your choices:

Before committing to a paint color, test large swatches on various walls in your room at different times of the day. Observe how both natural and artificial light affect the color, which can vary significantly from morning to night.

4. Artificial Lighting temperature matters:

The temperature of your bulbs (measured in Kelvins) can change how a paint color looks. Warmer bulbs (lower Kelvin number) pair well with warmer neutrals, while cooler bulbs (higher Kelvin number) suit cooler neutrals.

5. Reflective qualities:

Consider choosing a paint with a certain finish to react appropriately with your lighting conditions. Glossier finishes reflect more light and can help brighten up dim rooms, while flatter finishes might work better in well-lit spaces to reduce glare.

By assessing your room’s natural and artificial lighting and thoughtfully sampling potential neutrals under these specific conditions, you can find a neutral paint color that not only looks beautiful but enhances your home’s overall aesthetic regardless of lighting challenges.
