Introduction:

Garter snakes are non-venomous, harmless reptiles commonly found in gardens and woodlands across North America. Catching a garter snake can be an exciting adventure for wildlife enthusiasts or a helpful skill for those wanting to relocate one from their property. This article offers a step-by-step guide on how to safely catch and handle a garter snake.

Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment

Proper tools and protection are essential when catching a garter snake. The following items will ensure your own safety as well as the snake’s:

– Gloves: Thick gardening or work gloves will protect your hands from potential bites or scratches.

– Snake hook or tongs: These specialized tools help you gently lift and control the snake at a safe distance.

– Pillowcase or snake bag: A soft, breathable fabric bag is ideal for containing the snake during transport.

Step 2: Approach with Caution

Garter snakes are quick and agile, so try to approach them slowly and calmly to reduce stress for both you and the animal:

– Observe the snake’s location, behavior, and surroundings.

– If possible, approach the snake from behind or diagonally rather than head-on.

– Be aware of your shadow; avoid casting it over the snake to prevent startling it.

Step 3: Gently Pin the Snake

Carefully pinning the garter snake down before attempting to pick it up lowers its risk of injury:

– With gloved hands, use your thumb and forefinger to gently but firmly hold the snake’s head behind its jaw, or use a hook or tongs if preferred.

– Carefully slide your other hand underneath the body of the snake, providing support along its length.

Step 4: Lift the Snake Correctly

In order to avoid injuring the spine of a garter snake, you should not lift it by its tail or head alone:

– Gently hoist the snake, using both hands to cradle its body evenly.

– Once securely held, lift the snake off the ground and keep it at a comfortable distance from your body.

Step 5: Place the Snake in a Bag

Safely secure the garter snake in a bag for transport or temporary containment:

– With one hand still supporting its body, use your other hand to open the pillowcase or snake bag.

– Slowly lower the snake into the open container, head first.

– Hold the top of the bag closed while releasing your grip on the snake’s head.

Step 6: Carefully Release or Relocate

When setting the garter snake free, consider its safety and well-being along with any human interactions, state laws, and regulations that may apply:

– Choose a suitable release site with ample cover and resources for the snake to thrive.

– Open the bag near some bushes or undergrowth where the snake can escape quickly.

– Keep a safe distance from local human-inhabited areas to minimize conflicts.

Conclusion:

Catching a garter snake can be an enjoyable and educational experience. By following these simple steps, you will ensure that both you and the reptile remain safe. Always remember to practice responsible wildlife stewardship by respecting these fascinating creatures in their natural habitats.
