How to Calibrate Your 3D Printer Accurately

If you own a 3D printer, you know how important calibration is. Calibrating your 3D printer is essential to achieving accurate and high-quality prints. In this article, we will guide you through the process of calibrating your 3D printer so that you can achieve the best results.

Step 1: Leveling the Bed

The first step in calibrating your 3D printer is leveling the bed. Make sure that your printer’s bed is level as it is the foundation for all your prints.

Start by lowering the printer’s nozzle to touch the print bed. Next, move it to each corner of the bed and check if the distance between the bed and the nozzle is the same. If there are any inconsistencies, adjust the bed’s height to ensure an even distance of 0.1mm between the nozzle and the bed.

Step 2: Extruder Calibration

After leveling the bed, it is crucial to calibrate the extruder. The extruder is the component that pushes the filament into the nozzle. The goal is to ensure that a consistent amount of filament is being extruded.

To calibrate the extruder, you need to measure the amount of plastic being extruded. Start by heating the extruder to your preferred temperature, 200-220 °C is the ideal range for most filaments. Next, select the extrude option from your 3D printer’s menu, and measure the flow of the plastic.

You can use a digital scale to measure the weight of the filament as it is being extruded. The ideal output should be 100mm of filament weighing exactly 10g. If the weight is off, adjust the extrusion multiplier until you get the desired weight.

Step 3: XYZ Calibration

The final calibration is for the XYZ axis. Calibration of these dimensions is critical to ensure that the printer can print the desired shapes accurately. If the dimensions are off, it can result in prints with incorrect shapes and sizes.

To calibrate the XYZ axis, you can use a calibration cube or a set of calipers to measure the dimensions of the shape printed. The shape should be 20mm by 20mm, and the height should be 20mm.

Measure the dimensions of the printed shape using a set of calipers. If the dimensions are correct, you don’t need to adjust your printer. However, if they are off, go to your printer’s settings and adjust the axis values accordingly.
