Percentage increase is a valuable tool that allows you to quantify growth or change over time. It can be applied to various aspects of life, such as sales, grades, or investments. In this article, we will teach you step by step how to calculate the increase in percentage.

Understanding Percentage Increase:

To calculate the percentage increase, we need two values: the initial value (old value) and the final value (new value). By comparing these values, we can determine the extent of the growth or change.

Step-by-step Instructions to Calculate Percentage Increase:

1. Identify the Old Value and New Value:

Determine the initial and final values for which you want to calculate the percentage increase.

2. Calculate the Difference:

Subtract the old value from the new value to find the difference between them. This difference represents the amount of change that occurred.

Formula: Difference = New Value – Old Value

3. Divide the Difference by Old Value:

Next, divide the difference you obtained in step 2 by the old value to determine how much change occurred relative to its initial state.

Formula: Relative Change = Difference / Old Value

4. Multiply by 100 to convert it into a percentage:

To express this relative change as a percentage, multiply it by 100.

Formula: Percentage Increase = (Relative Change * 100)

5. Interpret your result:

The final result obtained in step 4 represents the percentage increase between your old and new values. A positive result indicates growth or an improvement, whereas a negative result signifies a decline.

Example:

Let’s illustrate this process with an example. Suppose your monthly salary increased from $3000 to $3300.

1. Old Value = $3000

New Value = $3300

2. Difference = New Value – Old Value

Difference = $3300 – $3000

Difference = $300

3. Relative Change = Difference / Old Value

Relative Change = $300 / $3000

Relative Change = 0.1

4. Percentage Increase = (Relative Change * 100)

Percentage Increase = (0.1 * 100)

Percentage Increase = 10%

5. Result Interpretation:

The result indicates that your salary increased by 10%.

Conclusion:

Calculating the increase in percentage is a simple yet powerful technique to understand growth or change in various aspects of life. This indispensable tool can help you make informed decisions and track your progress in personal, professional, and financial contexts. Armed with this knowledge, you are now well-equipped to calculate percentage increases in any situation.
