Calculating the change is a fundamental skill that everyone should acquire. It comes in handy while handling cash transactions, budgeting, or even simply distributing money among friends. In this article, we will discuss the process of calculating the change step-by-step and provide a few real-life examples.

Step 1: Identify your starting amount (initial cash or balance)

Before you can calculate the change, you need to know how much money you started with. This could be the initial cash in your wallet or bank account balance.

Step 2: Determine the amount paid or received

This is the amount of money involved in a transaction such as payment, purchases or money received from someone.

Step 3: Subtract to find the change

To calculate the change, simply subtract the amount paid or received from your initial amount. The result is the remaining balance or change after completing the transaction.

Example 1: Cashier giving change at a store

A customer purchases items worth $17.50 and hands over a $20 bill to pay. To find out how much change is owed to the customer, we’ll subtract:

Initial amount: $20 (The amount handed over by the customer)

Amount spent: $17.50 (Cost of purchased items)

Change = Initial Amount – Amount Spent

Change = $20 – $17.50 = $2.50

Example 2: Sharing expenses among friends

Three friends go out for dinner and agree to split the bill equally. The total bill comes to $75 and each friend has contributed $30 initially. To calculate how much money each friend gets back after paying their share, we’ll follow these steps:

Total Bill: $75

Initial Contribution per person: $30

Share per person = Total Bill / Number of friends

Share per person = $75 / 3 = $25

Change per person = Initial Contribution – Share per person

Change per person = $30 – $25 = $5

In conclusion, calculating the change is a simple process that involves identifying the initial amount, determining the amount paid or received, and then subtracting these two values to find the remaining balance or change. Practice this skill in your everyday life to become confident in quickly and accurately calculating change across various situations.
