How to calculate pka from ph

Understanding the relationship between pH and pKa is essential for various branches of science, particularly within chemistry and biochemistry. The pKa value is an important parameter that measures the acidic strength of a given substance. On the other hand, the pH value determines the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution. In this article, we will delve into how to calculate pKa from pH, using different concepts and formulas.

What are pH and pKa?

1. pH: It stands for “power of hydrogen” and is a logarithmic scale used to express the acidity or basicity of a solution. It ranges from 0 to 14, with values lower than 7 representing acidic solutions, 7 being neutral, and values above 7 indicating basic or alkaline solutions.

2. pKa: This parameter represents the “acid dissociation constant” and gives insight into the acidic strength of a substance. A lower pKa value suggests stronger acidity, whereas higher values signify weaker acids.

Calculating pKa from pH:

To calculate pKa from pH, you will need three vital pieces of information:

1. pH value

2. Concentration of the acidic species ([A-])

3. Concentration of the undissociated acid ([HA])

Once you have these three pieces of data at hand, follow these steps:

Step 1: Determine the ratio between [A-] (concentration of the acidic species) and [HA] (concentration of the undissociated acid). Divide [A-] by [HA] to get this ratio.

Ratio = [A-] / [HA]

Step 2: Utilize the following equation that relates pH, pKa, and the ratio you obtained in Step 1:
pH = pKa + log10(Ratio)

Step 3: Rearrange the equation to isolate the pKa:

pKa = pH – log10(Ratio)

Step 4: With the given pH value and the ratio calculated in Step 1, substitute the values into the equation from Step 3:

pKa = (provided pH value) – log10(calculated ratio)

Step 5: Solve for pKa.

That’s it! You have successfully calculated the pKa value using the pH.
