Whether you’re in school, navigating your finances, or just curious about the world around you, calculating percentages is a skill that comes in handy. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate the percentage of a number using simple steps and examples.

1. Understanding Percentage

Percentage is a mathematical concept used to express numbers as a part of 100, denoted with the “%” symbol. When you say that something is a certain percentage, it means that it’s that fraction of 100.

2. The Basic Percentage Formula

The basic formula for calculating a percentage from a specific number is:

Percentage (%) = (Portion / Total) x 100

Where:

– The “Portion” represents the part or the quantity of interest.

– The “Total” represents the whole amount – the context within which the portion resides.

– The result will be expressed as a percentage (%).

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Calculate Percentage

Follow these steps to calculate percent:

Step 1: Identify the Portion and Total

First, you need to know what part (the portion) and what whole (the total) you are trying to find the percentage in relation.

Step 2: Divide the Portion by the Total

Divide the portion by the total (portion/total), which will give you a decimal number.

Step 3: Convert Decimal to Percentage

To convert this decimal number into percentage, multiply it by 100.

Step 4: Add Percent Symbol

Finally, add ‘%’ at the end of your calculated number to obtain your desired percentage.

Example:

Let’s say you scored 70 marks out of a total of 100 marks on an exam. To find what percentage of marks you scored:

1. Portion = 70 (marks obtained)

Total = 100 (total marks)

2. Dividing the portion by the total (70/100) = 0.7 (decimal number)

3. Converting decimal to percentage (0.7 x 100) = 70

4. Adding ‘%’ to the calculated number, we get 70%

So, you scored 70% on the exam.

4. Other Percentage Calculations

– Finding a percentage increase or decrease:

This technique is useful in comparing increases or decreases between two values. The formula for both increase and decrease is:

Percentage Change = ((New Value – Old Value) / Old Value) x 100

Remember that if the result is positive, it’s an increase, and if it’s negative, it’s a decrease.

– Finding a value when given a percentage:

Sometimes you might be faced with a situation where you need to find a specific value given a percentage. In this case, use this formula:

Value = Total x (Percentage / 100)

Calculating percentage values doesn’t have to be intimidating! Just follow these simple steps and practice with real-life examples to become confident in your skills.
