How to calculate percent recovery

Percent recovery is a term used in chemistry and engineering to measure the efficiency of a process, particularly in extracting, purifying, or isolating a specific substance or product. It is also useful in evaluating the success of an experiment or process as well as identifying possible loss areas that need improvement. In this article, we’ll be discussing how to calculate percent recovery using a simple formula.

Steps to Calculate Percent Recovery

1. Identify Initial and Final Quantities

The first step in calculating percent recovery is to determine the initial (starting) quantity and the final (recovered) quantity of the substance or product. Ideally, these values will be measured in the same units (e.g., grams) to allow for accurate calculations.

2. Formulate the Percent Recovery Equation

The basic formula for calculating percent recovery is:

Percent Recovery = (Recovered Quantity / Initial Quantity) * 100

Where:

– Recovered Quantity: The quantity of substance that has been successfully recovered after conducting the process.

– Initial Quantity: The total quantity of substance present before undertaking the process.

– * 100: To convert the result into a percentage value.

3. Perform the Calculation

After determining the initial and final quantities, plug them into the formula mentioned above:

Percent Recovery = (Recovered Quantity / Initial Quantity) * 100

Calculate the result to obtain your percent recovery value.

4. Interpret Your Results

The calculated percent recovery indicates how successfully you have recovered your compound of interest from its original mixture or process. A higher percent recovery denotes better efficiency in extracting and purifying your desired compound.

Keep in mind that depending on the methods used and other factors, such as contamination or experimental errors, it may not always be possible to achieve a 100% recovery rate. However, an ideal target would be at least above 90% to ensure excellent efficiency and execution of your process.
