Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standard measure of a student’s academic performance, calculated by taking the average of the assigned grades for each subject. In middle schools, GPA may not always be credit-based. In this article, we’ll discuss how to calculate GPA without credits, helping you gain insights into your academic progress.

Step-by-step guide to calculating GPA in middle school without credits

1. Understand the grading system: Familiarize yourself with the grading scale used in your middle school. Most institutions use a scale from 0 to 4 (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0), while some may use other scales. Check with your school for their specific grading system.

2. List your courses: Write down the list of subjects you’re enrolled in for the semester or academic year.

3. Determine subject grades: Collect the report cards or transcripts that showcase individual subject grades for each course. Record these grades next to each subject on your list. Convert them to numerical values based on your school’s grading scale.

4. Calculate total grade points: Add up the total number of grade points you’ve earned by combining the numerical values of each subject grade.

5. Count the number of subjects/courses: Calculate how many subjects you have taken during the semester or academic year.

6. Calculate average grade points: Divide the total grade points by the number of courses you took during that period (semester or academic year). The result is your average (mean) Grade Point for all courses.

7. Round off: Round off your average grade point to two decimal places for a precise and easy-to-read result.

Example:

Let’s assume that you completed six subjects in a semester with a non-credit-based middle school system.

1. English – A

2. Mathematics – B

3. Science – A

4. History – B

5. Physical Education – C

6. Art – A

Using the scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F=0), convert the letter grades to numerical values.

1. English (A) – 4

2. Mathematics (B) – 3

3. Science (A) – 4

4. History (B) – 3

5. Physical Education (C) – 2

6. Art (A) – 4

Add up the numerical values of the subject grades obtained:

4 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 4 = 20

Divide the total grade points by the number of subjects you studied:

20 ÷ 6 = 3.33

Round off to two decimal places: Your GPA for that semester would be approximately 3.33.

Conclusion

Understanding your middle school GPA can offer valuable insights into your academic performance and help you set goals for improvement in weaker areas. Although calculating GPA may vary across institutions, the non-credit GPA calculation provided in this article should help you take control of your academic progress even in middle school.
