How to calculate gallons in a round container

Whether you’re filling up a fish tank, a swimming pool, or a large storage barrel, it’s essential to know the quantity of liquid that your container can hold. Round containers are particularly common, and calculating their capacity in gallons might seem intimidating at first. This article will walk you through the steps to determine the gallon capacity of any round container.

Step 1: Measure the dimensions of the container

In order to calculate gallons in a round container, you’ll need two measurements: the diameter (or radius) and the height. These measurements must be taken in inches as we are calculating gallons. Use a measuring tape or ruler to accurately measure these dimensions.

Step 2: Determine the radius

To find the radius of your container, you can either directly measure it, or divide the diameter by 2. The radius is important because it’s used in calculating the volume of a cylinder (which is how we’re treating our round container).

Step 3: Convert dimensions to feet

Since we are calculating gallons and our measurements are in inches, we must convert our dimensions into feet. To do this, divide each measurement by 12 (since there are 12 inches in 1 foot).

Radius (in feet) = Radius (in inches) / 12

Height (in feet) = Height (in inches) / 12

Step 4: Calculate volume using the cylinder formula

Volume (in cubic feet) = π * r² * h

where:

– π is a constant equal to approximately 3.1416

– r is the radius in feet

– h is the height in feet

Step 5: Convert cubic feet to gallons

Finally, convert cubic feet into gallons by multiplying it by 7.48052 (since there are approximately 7.48052 gallons in each cubic foot).

Gallons = Volume (in cubic feet) * 7.48052

Now you have the capacity of your round container in gallons!

Example:

Let’s take a look at an example with a round container that has a diameter of 24 inches and a height of 36 inches.

1. Determine the radius: 24 in / 2 = 12 inches

2. Convert dimensions to feet: Radius = 12 in / 12 = 1 ft, Height = 36 in / 12 = 3 ft

3. Calculate volume: V = π * r² * h = 3.1416 * (1^2) * 3 = 9.4248 cubic feet

4. Convert cubic feet to gallons: Gallons = V *7.48052 = 9.4248 * 7.48052 ≈70.53 gallons

The round container can hold approximately 70.53 gallons of liquid.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
