How to calculate f1 score

F1 score is a widely used metric to evaluate the performance of classification algorithms, especially in situations dealing with imbalanced datasets. It combines precision and recall and provides a single number that represents the trade-off between these two factors. But, how do we calculate the f1 score? In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step by step.

Step 1: Understand Precision and Recall

Before diving into the calculation of F1 score, it’s essential to first understand precision and recall.

– Precision: Also known as positive predictive value (PPV), it indicates the percentage of correctly predicted positive instances out of the total positive instances predicted by a classifier.

Formula: Precision = (True Positives) / (True Positives + False Positives)

– Recall: Also known as sensitivity or true positive rate (TPR), it indicates the percentage of correctly predicted positive instances out of all true positive instances in a dataset.

Formula: Recall = (True Positives) / (True Positives + False Negatives)

Step 2: Calculate Precision and Recall

Let’s assume we have a classification model with the following confusion matrix:

Actual

Predicted | TP | FP

| FN | TN

Where:

TP = True Positive

FP = False Positive

FN = False Negative

TN = True Negative

Calculate both precision and recall using their respective formulas mentioned above.

Step 3: Compute F1 Score

Now that we have calculated precision and recall, computing F1 score becomes simple. The formula for calculating F1 score is given below:

F1 Score = 2 * (Precision * Recall) / (Precision + Recall)

Let’s say our obtained precision is 0.8, and recall is 0.6, then:

F1 Score = 2 * (0.8 * 0.6) / (0.8 + 0.6)

= 2 * (0.48) / 1.4

≈ 0.6857

Step 4: Interpret the F1 Score

The F1 score ranges from 0 to 1, with one being the best possible score and zero being the worst. A higher F1 score indicates that a model has good precision and recall, meaning it can correctly predict both the positive and negative cases well.

Conclusion

Calculating F1 score is a valuable way to evaluate classification models, particularly when dealing with imbalanced datasets. By understanding how to calculate precision, recall, and ultimately the F1 score, you can better assess your model’s performance and make necessary improvements. Happy coding!

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
