Calculating days in Excel can sometimes seem daunting, especially when working with varying date formats or complex formulas. Fear not! This article will guide you through various methods on how to calculate days in excel, step by step. Get ready to become an Excel expert in no time!

1. Calculating Days Using the DATEDIF Function

The DATEDIF function is a powerful tool that allows you to calculate the difference between two dates in various units such as days, months, or years.

Syntax: =DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, unit)

Here’s the breakdown of the parameters:

– start_date: The start date

– end_date: The end date

– unit: The type of information requested (e.g., “d” for days, “m” for months, “y” for years)

Example:

In cell A1, enter the start date 01/01/2021.

In cell B1, enter the end date 01/31/2021.

In cell C1, enter the formula =DATEDIF(A1, B1, “d”).

The result will be 30 days.

2. Simple Subtraction Method

Another way to calculate the number of days between two dates is by simply subtracting them.

Syntax: =end_date – start_date

Example:

In cell A1, enter the start date 01/01/2021.

In cell B1, enter the end date 01/31/2021.

In cell C1, enter the formula =B1 – A1.

The result will be 30 days.

3. Calculating Workdays using NETWORKDAYS and NETWORKDAYS.INTL Functions

Excel has functions that help you calculate workdays (excluding weekends and holidays) between two dates: NETWORKDAYS and NETWORKDAYS.INTL.

– NETWORKDAYS: Automatically excludes weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and can also exclude holidays if provided.

Syntax: =NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, [holidays])

– NETWORKDAYS.INTL: Allows you to choose the days regarded as weekends and can also exclude holidays.

Syntax: =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start_date, end_date, [weekend], [holidays])

Example:

In cell A1, enter the start date 01/01/2021.

In cell B1, enter the end date 01/31/2021.

In cell C1, enter the formula =NETWORKDAYS(A1, B1). This will calculate workdays excluding weekends.

The result will be 21 workdays.

Conclusion

Excel provides various methods to calculate days depending on what you want to achieve. Utilizing DATEDIF, subtraction, NETWORKDAYS, and NETWORKDAYS.INTL functions can make your life easier by quickly calculating days, months or years between dates and helping you manage your deadlines efficiently. Happy calculating!
