You’ve seen the endless videos of skateboarders and BMX riders performing jaw-dropping tricks on halfpipes and ramps. Now it’s time to bring that excitement to your backyard with this comprehensive guide on how to build your own halfpipe or ramp. Let’s dive in!

1. Planning and Designing

First and foremost, you need to decide on the size and dimensions of your halfpipe or ramp. Consider the available space, your skill level, and the types of tricks you want to perform. Typical ramp dimensions include mini ramps (2-3 feet high) and halfpipes reaching 4-6 feet high. You can customize these dimensions based on your preferences.

2. Materials and Tools

To build a sturdy halfpipe or ramp, gather the necessary materials:

– Plywood sheets – minimum thickness: ¾ inches

– Wooden beams (2x4s)

– Masonite or Skatelite (a protective surface for riding)

– Galvanized metal – for coping (the top edge of the ramp)

– Screws, nails, bolts

– Drill, saw, hammer

– Tape measure, pencil, level

– Safety gear (gloves, goggles, etc.)

3. Building the Frame

Begin by constructing the two side frames that determine your ramp’s shape.

a) Draw a curve – This will be the transition curve of your ramp. Use a tape measure to plot points at various heights alongthe curve, then join them using a piece of flexible wood or PVC pipe.

b) Cut the curve – Using a jigsaw or circular saw, carefully cut along the transition curve.

c) Duplicate – Create an identical copy of your side frame by tracing it onto another plywood sheet.

d) Connect the side frames – Attach 2×4 beams horizontally every 8 inches between both frames using screws or nails. Make sure they are level and evenly spaced.

4. Installing Sublayers

It’s time to attach the plywood sheets to the frame, creating a riding surface.

a) Start with the bottom and go upwards – Lay down your first sheet of plywood across the bottom of the ramp and screw it into place.

b) Stagger joints – When adding more sheets, make sure to stagger the joints to provide extra strength to your ramp.

5. Surface Application

You’ll need a strong, weather-resistant surface for your ramp. Skatelite or Masonite are excellent choices.

a) Measure and cut – Cut your preferred surface in accordance with your ramp size.

b) Attach to sublayers – Attach each section using screws at least every 6-8 inches. Be cautious and ensure not to leave any protruding screw heads or surface irregularities.

6. Coping Installation

Coping will provide a smooth edge for grinding tricks and add durability to your ramp.

a) Measure and cut – Cut galvanized metal pipes according to the width of your halfpipe.

b) Attach coping – Cut notches in the side frames at equal distances apart so that the coping can sit flush overthem. Secure it with screws or bolts after aligning it correctly along the width of your ramp.

And voilà! You’ve successfully built a custom halfpipe or ramp in your backyard. With practice and dedication, you’ll soon be performing impressive tricks on your very own creation. Happy skating!
