Cornhole is a popular backyard game that offers hours of fun and friendly competition for the whole family. With simple rules, and even simpler equipment, it’s no surprise that it has become a favorite pastime at barbecues, picnics, and tailgating events alike. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of building your own cornhole game set from scratch.

Materials Needed:

– 2 Sheets of 1/2 inch thick plywood (2ft x 4ft)

– 4 lengths of 2×4 wood (8ft long)

– 3-inch wood screws

– Wood glue

– Jigsaw or hole saw

– Drill with a 3/8-inch bit

– Measuring tape

– Pencil

– Sandpaper (120-grit)

– Paint or stain (optional)

– Cornhole bags (8)

Step 1: Build the Cornhole Boards

Start by cutting your plywood sheets down to size. Each board should measure 2 feet wide by 4 feet long. Sand the edges smooth with sandpaper once they are cut.

Next, cut your 2x4s into four pieces each measuring 48 inches in length and four pieces measuring 21 inches in length. These will make up the frame of your cornhole boards.

Take two of the shorter 2x4s and two of the longer ones to create a rectangular frame. Use wood glue as well as screws to secure them together from the corners. Repeat this process for the second frame.

Attach each plywood top to its respective frame using wood glue and screws around the edges. Ensure that it is securely fastened before moving on.

Step 2: Cut Cornhole Holes

Measure and mark the center point for the hole on each board. It should be placed centrally, with a distance of 9 inches from the top of the board and 12 inches from each side.

Using a hole saw or jigsaw, carefully cut out the hole with a diameter of 6 inches. Take your time to ensure clean, smooth cuts. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges from the cut.

Step 3: Build and Attach the Legs

Cut four more lengths of 2x4s, each measuring approximately 12 inches long. These will serve as your board’s legs.

Round one end of each leg using a jigsaw or sander to create a slight curve. This will allow it to rotate freely within the frame when attached.

Drill a 3/8-inch hole through both the rounded end of each leg and the corresponding sidepiece at the top of your frames. Attach each leg by fastening a bolt through these holes, securing it with washers and lock nuts on one side.

Adjust the legs so that each cornhole board has a height of 12 inches at its tallest point and 3 inches at its lowest point when it is placed on level ground.

Step 4: Paint or Stain (Optional)

For a personalized touch, paint or stain your cornhole boards according to your preferred design or color scheme. You may choose to paint stripes, logos, or apply decals for added flair. Be sure to apply a clear sealant once your paint or stain has dried to protect against weather damage.

Step 5: Play!

With your homemade cornhole game set complete, all you need are eight cornhole bags (four of one color, and four of another) and some friends or family members for an enjoyable game day! Set up your boards approximately 27 feet apart, following official cornhole rules, and get ready for hours of fun-filled competition!
