Ghost shrimp, also known as glass shrimp, are small, transparent crustaceans commonly kept as aquarium pets. Apart from their fascinating appearance, ghost shrimp are also known for their scavenging abilities and their relatively low maintenance. If you’re interested in breeding ghost shrimp to maintain a healthy population in your tank or expand your aquarium hobby, this article will guide you through the process.

1. Preparing the environment

The first step in breeding ghost shrimp is to provide an ideal environment for mating and raising their offspring. A 10-gallon tank will suffice for a small colony of ghost shrimp. Make sure the water parameters are stable and the temperature is maintained at around 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, maintain a pH level of 7-8.

2. Introducing live plants

Live plants should be added to the tank for several reasons. Firstly, they create hiding spots and a more natural environment for the shrimp. These hiding spots provide a safe haven for mating and egg-carrying females. Secondly, plants offer biofilm that serve as a food source for ghost shrimp, especially during their early developmental stages.

3. Providing a balanced diet

Feeding your ghost shrimp a balanced diet ensures their overall health and vitality, promoting successful breeding. Their diet includes algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as spinach and zucchini, brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

4. Forming an adequate male-to-female ratio

Sexing ghost shrimp can be challenging due to their transparency. Males usually have thinner bodies while gravid females possess an elongated greenish-yellow area behind their head filled with eggs (also called saddle). Aim for a 1:2 male-to-female ratio to increase the likelihood of mating.

5. Monitoring mating behavior

When conditions are favorable, males will begin pursuing females in the tank. Once the female molts, it indicates that she is ready to mate. The male will then deposit sperm into the female’s saddle, fertilizing the eggs. During this time, limit stressors, and do not disturb the tank environment.

6. Separating pregnant females

It’s crucial to separate pregnant females from other tank inhabitants as some fish may prey on the young ghost shrimp. Carefully and gently move pregnant females into a separate breeding tank filled with the same water used in the main tank.

7. Hatching and raising ghost shrimp fry

After a few weeks of carrying fertilized eggs, female ghost shrimp release their fry directly into the water. At this stage, it’s crucial to maintain optimal water conditions to ensure their survival.

Feed ghost shrimp fry with infusoria, biofilm or powdered fish food for 1-2 weeks before gradually transitioning them to the same diet as adult shrimp. Be sure to provide hiding spots and keep lighting dimmed.

8. Transitioning juvenile shrimp

After 4-5 weeks or once the juveniles have reached around 0.5 inches in length, they can be safely reintroduced into the main tank or community aquarium.
