Introduction

In the world of shooting, accuracy and precision are of paramount importance. One way to improve these aspects of your shooting experience is by properly bedding your rifle stock. Bedding refers to the process of providing a consistent and stable support for the action, ensuring optimal contact between the stock and the barrel. This article will guide you step-by-step on how to bed a rifle stock, discussing the benefits and sharing some helpful tips along the way.

Benefits of Bedding a Rifle Stock

1. Improved accuracy and consistency: A well-bedded rifle stock supports the action evenly, preventing potential warping or twisting under pressure. This results in improved shot-to-shot consistency and overall accuracy.

2. Enhanced longevity: Bedding a rifle stock can prolong the lifespan of your firearm by reducing stress between the action and stock, as well as diminishing wear and tear.

3. Personalization: By bedding your own rifle stock, you can customize your firearm according to your preferences, thus optimizing its performance based on individual shooting styles and requirements.

Steps to Bed a Rifle Stock

1. Gather tools and materials: Firstly, assemble all necessary tools and materials, such as epoxy resin, release agent (e.g., car wax or petroleum jelly), bedding compound (e.g., Acraglas® Gel or Marine-Tex®), sandpaper, tape, drill bits, dremel tool or chisel, disposable brushes, mixing container, gloves, paper towels, Q-tips, and a good workspace.

2. Disassemble the rifle: Before starting any work on your rifle stock, ensure that it has been disassembled appropriately by following established safety practices.

3. Trim excess material: Remove any unnecessary material from inside the stock with a dremel tool or chisel in order to allow proper contact between the stock and barrel.

4. Sand the mating surfaces: Create a rough surface texture by sanding the action and barrel channel. Rough surfaces promote better adhesion of the bedding compound.

5. Apply release agent: Apply a release agent on all metal surfaces that will come into contact with the bedding compound to prevent bonding. Ensure that no epoxy sneaks into critical areas, like screws or trigger components.

6. Mix and apply bedding compound: Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mix epoxy resin and hardener to create the bedding compound. Apply a uniform layer on both the action and the stock, ensuring complete coverage.

7. Reassemble the rifle: Once the bedding compound has been applied, carefully reassemble the rifle, taking care not to disturb its placement. Ensure all screws are torqued appropriately to establish a secure fit.

8. Allow curing: Let the bedding compound cure according to manufacturer instructions, which can vary between 12 and 24 hours, depending upon the product.

9. Disassemble and inspect: After curing is complete, disassemble your rifle once more, and carefully inspect for any excess compound that needs to be removed or sanded away.

10. Test accuracy and repeatability: Finally, take your newly bedded rifle stock out to the range to confirm improved accuracy and shot-to-shot consistency.

Conclusion

Bedding a rifle stock is an essential process for those seeking improved accuracy, consistency, and longevity in their firearms. By following this comprehensive guide and remaining patient during each step of the process, you’ll find that investing time and effort into bedding your rifle stock will pay dividends in terms of your shooting experience and overall performance.
