Becoming an IATA (International Air Transport Association) certified agent can open up new opportunities for travel agencies and individual agents alike. An IATA accreditation demonstrates industry credibility, competence and professionalism in the global market. Follow these 15 steps to achieve your IATA certification.

1. Research: Begin by understanding the role of an IATA certified agent and how it can benefit your travel agency or career.

2. Check eligibility: Visit the IATA website to review the minimum requirements for accreditation, which vary depending on your location and type of business.

3. Attend an educational course: Enroll in an IATA training program, such as the Travel Sales and Operations Foundation Diploma or the Passenger Sales Agent course, to learn about global travel industry standards.

4. Gain experience: Acquire hands-on experience in the industry by working as a travel consultant or for a reputable travel agency without IATA accreditation.

5. Choose a location: Determine your preferred work location, whether it be from home, renting office space or partnering with an existing agency.

6. Register a business: Establish and register your travel agency with local authorities under applicable laws.

7. Obtain required legal documents: Acquire any requisite licenses, permits, or insurance necessary to comply with local regulations and ensure smooth operation.

8. Create a business plan: Develop a sound strategy outlining your management structure, marketing strategies, financial projections and expansion plans.

9. Arrange financing: Secure funds necessary to cover startup costs and maintain cash flow during your initial months of operation.

10. Set up office space: Designate an area that complies with IATA’s criteria for storing confidential client information securely.

11. Prepare for inspection: Ensure that your business meets all relevant safety standards and is equipped to handle clients’ needs professionally before requesting an inspection from IATA.

12. Apply for IATA accreditation: Complete the online application form on the IATA website and pay the applicable fees.

13. Submit supporting documents: Provide required documentation to support your application, such as financial reports, business licenses, and a completed business plan.

14. Schedule an inspection: Once your paperwork is submitted and reviewed by IATA, arrange an on-site inspection to evaluate your agency’s compliance with their criteria.

15. Receive your certification: After successful completion of the application process and passing the inspection, you will receive an official certificate, along with an IATA numeric code to use in business transactions.

Once you achieve IATA accreditation, stay updated on industry trends and maintain compliance with global standards to maximize your agency’s potential for success. Establishing yourself as a trusted IATA certified agent or agency can lead to increased credibility, a broader customer base, and unlimited growth possibilities in the world of travel.
