How to Avoid Tolls on Google Maps

Google Maps is the go-to navigation app for most people worldwide. With a variety of features, it makes traveling anywhere quick, easy, and efficient. However, one drawback is that it can sometimes suggest routes that include toll roads. While these roads are a quicker route to get to your destination, they come at a cost that you may not want to pay. Luckily, there are a few ways to avoid tolls on Google Maps without missing out on the app’s many benefits. In this article, we’ll look at some of these strategies.

  1. Turn off Toll Roads Option

The first and most obvious way to avoid tolls on Google Maps is to turn the ‘Tolls’ option off. This feature will ensure that Google Maps does not suggest any toll routes as you navigate to your destination. To turn off the ‘Tolls’ option, open the app and search for your destination. Click on ‘Directions,’ and under the destination’s name, you’ll find some icons indicating different modes of transportation, including driving, walking or public transit. Click on ‘Driving,’ and under the ‘Starting point’ and ‘Destination’ sections, you’ll find the ‘Options’ button. Click on it and uncheck the ‘Tolls’ option.

  1. Add Via Points

If turning off the ‘Tolls’ option isn’t an option, you can add via points along your route. A via point is essentially a point on your route that you must pass along before you get to your destination. To add a via point, follow the same steps mentioned above and select the ‘Add Stop’ option that appears. Once you add the stop, Google Maps will recalculate your route and offer a toll-free route.

  1. Use Local Maps

Google Maps is not the only navigation app available. In some regions, local maps may provide more accurate and reliable driving directions. They may also have data on tolls and provide you with alternative routes. For instance, in the USA, you can use the Waze app, which is also owned by Google, to get alternative routes that avoid tolls.

  1. Use Offline Maps

Google Maps has an offline feature that allows you to download maps and use them offline. This feature can be useful if you are traveling to an area where you are not familiar and have limited internet connectivity. With the offline maps feature, you can download maps of areas without toll roads, and Google Maps will use those maps to navigate you to your destination.

  1. Use Alternative Navigation Apps

You can also use other navigation apps that specialize in offering routes that avoid tolls entirely. Some examples include Sygic, Here WeGo, and MapQuest. While these apps may not have all the features that Google Maps provides, they are useful when you need to avoid tolls.

In conclusion, the above strategies can help you avoid tolls on Google Maps. However, keep in mind that avoiding tolls may not always be the most efficient route to your destination. You may have to sacrifice time for money. It’s up to you to decide the best option for your trip.
