How to Assemble a Clarinet: 15 Steps
1. Gather all the parts of the clarinet: mouthpiece, barrel, upper and lower joints, and bell. Place them on a clean, flat surface.
2. Wash your hands before handling the instrument. This prevents oils and dirt from transferring onto the clarinet’s delicate keys.
3. Start with the reed. Soak it in water for a few minutes while you prepare the rest of the clarinet.
4. Attach the ligature to the mouthpiece. The ligature is the metal or plastic piece that holds the reed in place on the mouthpiece. Slide it onto the mouthpiece, but do not tighten it yet.
5. Position the reed on the mouthpiece. The flat side of the reed should be facing down and aligned with the flat part of the mouthpiece. The tip of the reed should be lined up with, or just below, the tip of the mouthpiece.
6. Tighten the ligature securely around both the reed and mouthpiece, making sure it’s not too tight to avoid cracking the reed.
7. Connect the barrel to the upper joint by gently twisting it onto the tenon (the cylindrical end) of the upper joint.
8. Apply cork grease to all cork joints before assembling them. This helps protect and lubricate them for a longer lifespan.
9. Gently twist and push down on one key of the upper joint while aligning it with its corresponding key on the lower joint, then release both keys simultaneously to create a snug connection between these two joints.
10. Straighten out both joints so that they are perfectly aligned; this will ensure optimal sound when playing your instrument.
11. Attach the bell to the lower joint by gently twisting it onto its tenon until it’s snugly fitted together.
12. Double-check that all pieces are properly aligned: the bell should be in line with the clarinet’s body, while the mouthpiece, barrel, and upper joint should also form a straight, continuous line.
13. Hold the clarinet by its lower joint, avoiding touching any keys on the upper joint, as you place the mouthpiece onto your lips.
14. Adjust the clarinet’s angle by moving it away from your body until you find a comfortable playing position.
15. Finally, put your right thumb under the thumb rest and support your clarinet’s weight with your left hand while pressing down on their respective keys to begin playing!
Congratulations! You’ve successfully assembled your clarinet and are ready to start playing beautiful music. Remember to practice regularly and maintain your instrument by cleaning it after each use and storing it in its case when not in use. Happy playing!
