How to Add Transmission Fluid: 13 Steps

The transmission fluid plays a crucial role in your vehicle’s performance by keeping the gears lubricated and cool, ensuring smooth shifting and preventing wear. It’s essential to maintain the right level of transmission fluid; however, many people remain unsure of how to add it to their vehicles correctly. This step-by-step guide will help you through the process with ease, ensuring your car performs optimally.

1. Consult your vehicle’s owner manual: Before you begin, it’s essential to consult your vehicle’s owner manual. The manual will provide information on the type of transmission fluid compatible with your car and identify the location of the transmission dipstick (if applicable).

2. Gather necessary supplies: You will need a funnel, clean rags or paper towels, a container for any excess fluid, and the correct type of transmission fluid for your vehicle.

3. Park on a level surface: Ensure that your car is parked on an even surface so that you can accurately check the transmission fluid levels.

4. Turn off the engine and let it cool down: Make sure your engine is turned off and wait until it has cooled down completely before you start working on it.

5. Locate the transmission dipstick or filler plug: Consult your owner’s manual to locate the dipstick or filler plug in your vehicle. In most cases, this can be found under the hood near the engine.

6. Clean the area around the dipstick or filler plug: Use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe away any debris or dirt from the area surrounding the dipstick or filler plug.

7. If applicable, remove and check the dipstick: If your vehicle is equipped with a dipstick, pull it out slowly and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel. Re-insert it fully into its tube before removing again to check fluid levels.

8. Check fluid color and consistency: The fluid should be a translucent red color and have a consistency similar to syrup. If it’s brown or smells burnt, this might be a sign that your fluid needs to be replaced.

9. Assess the fluid level: If you have a dipstick, reference the markings to determine if you need to add more fluid. If there are no markings, use your owner manual to identify the correct amount needed.

10. Add transmission fluid, if needed: Slowly pour the required amount of transmission fluid into your vehicle using a funnel. For vehicles without a dipstick, locate the filler plug near the transmission and remove it before adding the fluid.

11. Repeat steps 7-9: After adding the recommended amount of fluid, check your levels again using steps 7 through 9.

12. Properly dispose of any used fluid: Transfer old or excess transmission fluid into an appropriate container for disposal. Contact your local waste management facility for instructions on proper disposal methods.

13. Replace the dipstick or filler plug: Lastly, re-insert and secure the dipstick or tighten up the filler plug according to your vehicle’s owner manual.

Regular maintenance, including checking and replenishing transmission fluid levels, is essential for optimal vehicle performance. Make sure to always consult your owner’s manual for specific instructions pertaining to your vehicle model and follow these steps as necessary to maintain your automobile in top condition.
