How the DNC Roll Call Went From Snooze to Sensation: DJ Cassidy on Lil Jon’s Cameo and the Playlist That Turned a Dull Tradition Into a Dance Party

When you think of political conventions, “dance party” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, that’s exactly what happened during the traditionally yawn-inducing roll call vote. Thanks to DJ Cassidy and a surprise appearance by Lil Jon, what was once a tedious formality became the talk of the town.

Traditionally, the roll call vote is about as exciting as watching paint dry. State delegates announce their votes in a monotonous procession that can last for hours. But DJ Cassidy had other plans. “I wanted to create a soundtrack that would energize and unite viewers across the nation,” he explained.

Cassidy’s playlist was a masterclass in diversity and inclusivity. From Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” the music spanned genres and generations. But it was Lil Jon’s unexpected cameo that truly set social media ablaze. As the rapper’s iconic “Yeah!” blasted through speakers nationwide, Twitter erupted with gleeful reactions.

The music didn’t just entertain; it served a purpose. Each song was carefully chosen to reflect the values and diversity of the Democratic Party. “We wanted the playlist to be a musical representation of America’s melting pot,” Cassidy noted.

This musical makeover of the roll call vote did more than just liven up a dull tradition. It demonstrated the power of music to unite and inspire, even in the most unlikely of settings. As one Twitter user put it, “Who knew I’d be dancing during a political convention?”

The success of this musical experiment raises an intriguing question: Could this be the future of political conventions? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – the days of the snooze-worthy roll call may be numbered.
