How much is AI hurting the planet? Big tech won’t tell us

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world, but its environmental footprint remains largely shrouded in secrecy. While big tech companies tout the benefits of AI, they are surprisingly silent about its carbon cost.

The truth is, training large language models like ChatGPT requires immense computational power, leading to significant energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.  These models are akin to digital behemoths, devouring massive amounts of data and electricity to learn and operate. While the exact figures remain undisclosed, experts estimate that the carbon footprint of training these models can be comparable to the emissions of a lifetime of driving a car.

The lack of transparency from big tech companies is alarming. Their silence fuels concerns about potential environmental harm, raising questions about the sustainability of AI development.  This opaque approach hinders the development of eco-conscious AI practices. Without knowing the true environmental cost, we cannot effectively address its negative impact.

Moreover, the lack of disclosure discourages the development of alternative approaches. Researchers and developers are left in the dark, unable to prioritize energy-efficient algorithms and training methods.  The industry needs to be open and accountable, sharing data and collaborating on solutions to minimize AI’s environmental footprint.

The time for silence is over. Big tech must step up and reveal the environmental impact of their AI endeavors. Transparency is the first step towards sustainable AI development, ensuring that this transformative technology contributes to a healthier planet, not further burden it.
