Introduction:

Are you thinking of re-roofing your home? Then you’ll certainly need to figure out the number of shingle bundles that you’ll require for this project. This article will guide you on how to calculate the number of bundles necessary to complete your roofing, saving both time and resources in the process.

Step 1: Roof Area Measurement

The first step is determining the size of your roof by calculating its area. To do this, you’ll need to know the dimensions of each roofing plane. Take precise measurements of the length and width for all planes and multiply these numbers to get their individual areas. Add up all those areas to obtain the total roof area.

Step 2: Determine the Shingle Coverage

Shingles are sold in bundles, with most covering approximately 100 square feet or 9.29 square meters, particularly when using three-tab shingles. For architectural shingles that display a thicker profile, coverage may range from 50-80 square feet or 4.64-7.43 square meters per bundle.

Step 3: Estimate Necessary Amount of Shingles

Now that you have your roof area measurements and the coverage per bundle, it’s easy to calculate how many shingle bundles you’ll need. Divide the total roof area by the coverage per bundle:

(Number of Roof Square Feet / Coverage per Bundle) = Number of Bundles Needed

Always round up to the nearest whole number since you can’t purchase a partial bundle.

Step 4: Account for Extra Shingles

It’s good practice to buy extra shingles for unforeseen incidents like breakages or misalignments during installation, as well as for future repairs. Add around 10-15% more than your estimated bundle count when purchasing shingles.

Example:

Suppose you’ve measured various planes on your roof and arrived at a total area of 2,400 square feet. Using three-tab shingles, the calculation would be as follows:

2,400 sqft / 100 sqft/bundle = 24 bundles

Accounting for extra shingles at 15%, the final bundle amount is:

24 + (24 x 0.15) = 27.6 ≈ 28 bundles required in total.

Conclusion:

To determine the number of shingle bundles needed for your roofing project, follow these steps: measure the roof area, identify shingle coverage, calculate the number of bundles, and account for extra shingles. By utilizing this simple calculator approach, you’ll be well-equipped to start your roofing project with confidence.
