How Does what3words Work and Is It Better Than a Real Address?

what3words is a unique addressing system that uses three random words to pinpoint the location of any address on the planet. The concept behind it is that it is easier to remember three words than a string of numbers and letters that make up a traditional address. So, how does it work, and is it better than a real address?

How Does it Work?

what3words divides the entire world into a grid of 3x3m squares and assigns each square a unique three-word address. This means that every location on the planet has a unique address made up of three random words. For instance, the three words “kingdom, final, drum” may refer to a spot on the side of the road somewhere in the world.

Using what3words is straightforward. When you need to navigate to an address, you first determine the three-word address of your destination. This step is easy because what3words has a database of all the three-word addresses of places on the planet. After determining the three-word address, you input it into the what3words navigation app, which directs you to the precise location.

Is it Better Than a Real Address?

The what3words addressing system has some advantages over traditional addresses. For instance, it is easier to remember, which makes it ideal for people who have difficulty remembering the string of numbers and letters that comprise traditional addresses. Additionally, what3words allows you to pinpoint a location with an accuracy of up to 3x3m, which is more accurate than traditional addresses.

Moreover, what3words can be used in places where traditional addresses do not work. For instance, in rural areas or places where there is no standard addressing system. In such cases, what3words can be used to locate emergency services or deliver goods and services.

However, what3words has some limitations. First, it is not a widely accepted addressing system, which means that not everyone may be familiar with it. Second, it is not precise enough for some applications. For instance, in large buildings, what3words can only get you to the front door, after which you may require further directions to get to your destination.
