How Are Cigarette Lighters and Accessory Sockets Different?

Cigarette lighters and accessory sockets are two different things, although they are often used interchangeably. While they may seem similar, there are some distinct differences between the two.

A cigarette lighter is designed for one specific purpose: to light a cigarette. It uses a small, coiled heating element to create a flame that can be used to light a cigarette or other small item. The heat is created by an electric current, which is supplied by the car’s electrical system. The cigarette lighter is typically located on the dashboard or console of a vehicle and is easily recognizable by its circular shape.

Accessory sockets, on the other hand, are designed to provide electrical power to a wide range of devices. These sockets are usually located in the same area as the cigarette lighter and look similar, but they are often labeled with a different name, such as “power outlet” or “12V outlet.” Accessory sockets can be used to power a wide range of devices, including cell phones, GPS units, and portable DVD players.

One of the biggest differences between cigarette lighters and accessory sockets is the amount of power they provide. Cigarette lighters are typically limited to around 10-15 amps, which is enough to power the lighter itself and perhaps a small device such as a cell phone charger. Accessory sockets, on the other hand, are designed to provide more power, with most being capable of providing up to 20 amps. This means that they can power larger devices such as portable DVD players and even small appliances such as a portable coffee maker.

Another difference between cigarette lighters and accessory sockets is the shape of the plug. Cigarette lighters use a circular plug that is specific to that device. Accessory sockets, on the other hand, use a standard, rectangular-shaped plug that is compatible with a wide range of devices.

Overall, while cigarette lighters and accessory sockets may look similar, they are designed for different purposes. Cigarette lighters are intended to be used to light cigarettes or other small items, while accessory sockets are designed to provide a source of electrical power for a wide range of devices. It’s important to understand the differences between the two so that you can use them properly and avoid any potential damage to your vehicle or the devices you’re attempting to power.
