Honda Is Already Testing a Manual Transmission for EVs

The automotive world is buzzing with the news of Honda‘s latest experiment: testing a manual transmission for electric vehicles. While the idea might seem counterintuitive, given the inherent simplicity of electric powertrains, Honda believes this innovation could offer a unique driving experience and potentially enhance fuel efficiency.

The concept is based on a “simulated” manual transmission, where the driver uses a traditional gear shifter to engage different “gears” that control the electric motor’s torque output. This creates a more engaging and responsive driving experience, reminiscent of the visceral feel of a manual gearbox in a gasoline car.

This move could be interpreted in two ways. On one hand, it might be seen as a step backwards, clinging to the past in a rapidly evolving world. The focus in EV development has been on maximizing efficiency and range, with manual gearboxes seemingly irrelevant in this context.

However, Honda’s approach could be seen as a bold and innovative move. By offering a familiar and engaging driving experience, they could attract drivers who miss the tactile feedback of a manual transmission, potentially expanding the appeal of EVs. Additionally, the simulated manual transmission could offer benefits in terms of range and efficiency by optimizing torque delivery at different speeds.

While the specifics of Honda’s experiment remain shrouded in secrecy, the potential for a manual transmission in EVs is undeniable. It remains to be seen whether this will be a fleeting novelty or a truly revolutionary approach to electric mobility. Only time will tell if this audacious move by Honda will rewrite the rules of EV driving.
