Introduction

Dry and itchy eyes are a common problem, especially in our modern world where we spend hours staring at computer screens and smart devices. These symptoms can be caused by various factors, including allergies, eye strain, and environmental irritants. However, there are various home remedies that can provide relief. In this article, we will explore some of these remedies based on the information from CNET’s Health & Personal Care section.

1. Blink more often

It may sound simple, but consciously blinking your eyes can help with dryness and irritation. Blinking spreads natural oils and tears across the eye surface providing much-needed lubrication. Make sure to take breaks from looking at screens and practice the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

2. Apply a warm compress

A warm compress can help soothe itchy eyes by increasing blood circulation around the eyelids, loosening up the oils in meibomian glands, and providing lubrication to the eye surface. Place a clean and damp washcloth or a heating pad over your closed eyes for about 10-15 minutes.

3. Use artificial tears

Over-the-counter artificial tears provide instant relief from dryness and itching by adding moisture to the eyes. Choose preservative-free formulations as they are less likely to cause irritation. Apply these as needed throughout the day.

4. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps maintain healthy tear production that provides essential hydration for your eyes. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.

5. Adjust your environment

Avoiding irritants such as smoke, pollen, or pet dander can reduce eye itchiness. Also, keep air moist with a humidifier to counter any dry indoor conditions that contribute to eye discomfort.

6. Wear sunglasses

Sunglasses can protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and reduce irritation caused by wind and debris. Choose sunglasses with 100% UV protection and wraparound frames for optimal coverage.

7. Adjust screen settings

One source of eye strain and discomfort is improper computer or smart device settings. Turning down brightness, increasing font size, and reducing glare can reduce eye strain.

8. Include Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet

Omega-3 fatty acids have shown potential benefits in improving ocular surface health, leading to reduced dry eye symptoms. Include cold-water fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, and chia seeds in your diet to increase your Omega-3 intake.

Conclusion

Although home remedies provide temporary relief for dry and itchy eyes, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional if these symptoms persist or worsen over time. Early intervention is key in managing more severe dry eye conditions and maintaining long-term eye health.
