Redefining the JRPG Genre

Square’s “Final Fantasy VII,” released in 1997 for the PlayStation, is a game that needs little introduction to RPG enthusiasts. It’s a title that not only defined a generation of gamers but also played a crucial role in popularizing Japanese RPGs (JRPGs) in the Western market. With its blend of cutting-edge technology, memorable characters, and a story that tackled themes far beyond typical fantasy fare, FFVII left an indelible mark on the gaming industry.

At its core, Final Fantasy VII tells the story of Cloud Strife, a mercenary drawn into a conflict against the powerful Shinra Electric Power Company, a megacorporation draining the planet’s life energy for profit. What begins as a local resistance movement soon expands into a globe-spanning adventure to save the world from both Shinra and Sephiroth, a legendary soldier with godlike ambitions.

One of FFVII’s most significant contributions was its use of pre-rendered backgrounds and full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes, which were groundbreaking for their time. These elements allowed for a cinematic storytelling approach that was previously impossible in video games. The transition from the overworld map to highly detailed 3D battle scenes was nothing short of revolutionary, setting a new standard for visual storytelling in RPGs.

The game’s character designs, created by Tetsuya Nomura, became instantly iconic. From Cloud’s spiky hair and oversized Buster Sword to Sephiroth’s long silver locks and katana, these characters have endured as some of the most recognizable in gaming history. But it wasn’t just their looks; each character had a rich backstory and development arc that unfolded throughout the game.

FFVII’s narrative was notable for its complexity and willingness to tackle mature themes. Environmental destruction, corporate greed, identity, and loss are all central to the story. The game wasn’t afraid to shock players, with one particular moment involving a beloved character becoming one of the most discussed and impactful scenes in gaming history.

The game’s battle system, while turn-based, introduced the Active Time Battle (ATB) gauge, adding a layer of urgency to combat. The Materia system for customizing characters’ abilities offered deep strategic options, allowing players to tailor their party’s strengths and weaknesses. Limit Breaks, powerful special moves that charged as characters took damage, added an extra layer of strategy and spectacle to battles.

Nobuo Uematsu’s soundtrack for FFVII is widely regarded as one of the greatest in video game history. From the tension-building “Opening – Bombing Mission” to the haunting “Aerith’s Theme,” the music played a crucial role in establishing the game’s atmosphere and emotional impact.

The game’s world was a unique blend of fantasy and science fiction, moving away from the medieval settings of previous Final Fantasy titles. The city of Midgar, with its pizza-like structure and stark division between the wealthy on the upper plates and the poor in the slums below, became a powerful symbol of the game’s themes.

FFVII’s legacy extends far beyond the original game. It has spawned numerous spin-offs, movies (Advent Children), and even a high-profile remake that began releasing in 2020. The remake itself is a testament to the enduring popularity and influence of the original.

While some aspects of FFVII have aged – particularly its graphics and translation – its core strengths in storytelling, character development, and thematic depth continue to resonate with players. For many, it represents a turning point in the perception of video games as a medium for complex, emotional storytelling.

In conclusion, Final Fantasy VII stands as a pivotal moment in RPG history. It pushed the boundaries of technology, storytelling, and thematic complexity in games. Its influence can be seen not just in subsequent JRPGs, but across the gaming industry as a whole. For anyone interested in the evolution of RPGs or video game storytelling, Final Fantasy VII remains an essential experience, a game that truly defined an era.
