Introduction

Skylights are popular additions to homes, providing an abundance of natural light and adding an aesthetic appeal. However, proper maintenance is crucial to keeping your skylights clean and functional. Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate, obstructing the light and diminishing the overall appearance of your living space. This article will outline 15 easy steps to clean your skylights efficiently.

1. Safety first: Cleaning skylights typically involves climbing a ladder and working at height. Ensure that you have a sturdy ladder that is securely placed against a solid surface. Consider using a ladder stabilizer or engaging a safety harness for added security.

2. Gather your cleaning supplies: Arm yourself with a soft microfiber cloth or sponge, glass cleaner solution or mild soap mixed with water, a long-handled squeegee, a rubber-blade attachment for the squeegee and rubber gloves.

3. Choose a suitable time: Opt for cleaning tasks on cloudy days for minimal glare and sun, which may cause rapid drying of the cleaning solution on the glass.

4. Clear the surrounding area: Remove any objects or furniture blocking your access to the skylight opening.

5. Clean the interior side first: Begin by dusting off cobwebs or loose dirt with a long-handled duster or broom.

6. Apply cleaning solution: For better results, follow product instructions when mixing cleaning solutions.

7. Wipe in circular motions: Gently rub the glass surface in circular motions using a soft cloth or sponge soaked in cleaning solution, avoiding any scraping movement that could scratch the glass.

8. Use the rubber-blade attachment for stubborn spots: For spots with persistent stains, attach the rubber blade to the squeegee and gently glide it across the glass surface to remove any residue.

9. Squeegee off excess water: Ensure smooth strokes working from top to bottom, wiping the squeegee blade with a cloth after each pass.

10. Wipe away edge drips: Once the interior glass surface is clean, use your microfiber cloth to wipe away any moisture or cleaning solution left around the edges.

11. Moving to the exterior side: Prepare for a more cumbersome task as you navigate your ladder positioning and tools.

12. Repeat steps 5-10 for the exterior side of the skylight glass.

13. Inspect your work: Take a moment to review your handiwork to ensure that your skylight is spotless and streak-free.

14. Clean up: Discard any disposable materials and store reusable tools appropriately for future use.

15. Routine maintenance: Regularly clean your skylights (recommend every 2-3 months) to maintain optimal light penetration while preserving their appearance and structural integrity.

Conclusion

Cleaning your skylight may seem daunting, but following these easy steps will simplify the process and keep your skylights shining brightly. Remember to ensure safety during this task, using proper equipment and tools. Regular cleaning will lead to prolonged life and functionality of your beloved skylights.
