Cilantro, a versatile herb also known as coriander, is widely used in various cuisines to enhance the taste of dishes. However, cleaning cilantro properly is essential to ensure that it’s free of dirt and any chemical residues. Here are 10 easy steps to clean cilantro effectively.

1. Gather your supplies: Before you start, make sure you have a cutting board, a sharp knife, a colander, and some paper towel or a clean kitchen towel ready.

2. Remove the leaves: If you prefer only using cilantro leaves in your dish, gently pick them off the stems before washing.

3. Discard damaged parts: Inspect each leaf or stem of cilantro and discard any yellow or wilted parts that may be present.

4. Rinse under water: Place the cilantro in a colander and rinse it thoroughly under cold running water. Shake it gently to remove as much water as possible.

5. Soak in water: Fill a bowl with cold water and place the cilantro inside. Allow it to soak for a few minutes. This will help remove any remaining dirt or debris from the leaves and stems.

6. Lift out of water: Gently take the cilantro out of the soaking bowl by lifting it above the surface of the water. This way, the dirt and debris that may have settled at the bottom won’t cling back onto the cilantro.

7. Rinse again: Place the cilantro back in the colander and give it another thorough rinse under cold running water to remove any leftover dirt or residue.

8. Drain well: Allow the cilantro to drain well in the colander for a few minutes, shaking occasionally to get rid of excess water.

9. Pat dry: Spread out paper towels or clean kitchen towels over your countertop or cutting board and gently pat dry each leaf and stem. You can also use a salad spinner if you have one.

10. Store or use immediately: Once the cilantro is cleaned and dried, you can either go ahead and prepare your dish or store the herb for future use. To store cilantro, either wrap it with a slightly damp paper towel and place it in a plastic zipper bag, or submerge the stems in a jar of water and cover the leaves with a plastic bag.

By following these 10 easy steps, you can effectively clean cilantro and ensure that it’s ready to enhance your favorite dishes.
