Don’t use Vim for the wrong reasons (2020)

Vim. The legendary text editor. A mythical beast revered by some, feared by others. Its modal editing paradigm is both a blessing and a curse, a source of boundless productivity for some, and a frustrating hurdle for others.

While Vim is a powerful tool, it’s not a magic bullet. Choosing it for the wrong reasons can lead to frustration and hinder your workflow. Here’s a breakdown of why you might be tempted to use Vim, and whether those reasons hold water:

1.”It makes you look cool.”

This is perhaps the most common reason people start using Vim. The truth is, looking cool shouldn’t be a factor in choosing your tools. If you’re constantly struggling with basic commands, you’re not being cool, you’re being inefficient. Focus on a tool that helps you get work done, not one that makes you feel trendy.

2.”It’s the only way to be truly efficient.”

While Vim’s efficiency is undeniable for experienced users, the learning curve is steep. For beginners, it can feel like a barrier to productivity. If you’re starting out, a less complex editor might be a better choice, allowing you to focus on learning the basics of coding, not memorizing keystrokes.

3.”It’s everywhere.”

Vim is indeed ubiquitous. From servers to remote machines, it’s almost always available. However, modern cloud-based IDEs and code editors are gaining ground, offering similar functionality with more intuitive interfaces. Don’t choose Vim just because it’s available – choose it because it’s the best tool for the job.

4.”It’s the ultimate challenge.”

Learning Vim can be a challenge, and conquering that challenge can be a source of pride. However, if you’re using Vim solely to prove something to yourself, you might be missing out on more productive tools. Your time is precious, invest it in tools that help you achieve your goals, not simply test your limits.

When Vim is the Right Choice:

You’re a seasoned developer: If you’ve spent years working with text editors, and are comfortable with modal editing, Vim’s power and flexibility can be a boon.

You need remote access: Vim is lightweight and available almost everywhere, making it ideal for working on servers or remote machines.

You want fine-grained control: Vim offers unmatched control over your text, allowing you to manipulate it at a granular level.

In Conclusion:

Vim is a powerful tool, but it’s not for everyone. Don’t fall prey to the hype or the desire to appear “cool.” Choose Vim for the right reasons, and you’ll unlock its potential. But if you’re just starting out, or if you find yourself struggling with basic tasks, don’t be afraid to explore other options. The most efficient tool is the one that helps you get work done, regardless of its perceived “cool factor.”
