Does Insurance Cover a Stolen Car?

Introduction

It is a nightmare for any car owner to discover that their vehicle has been stolen. The emotional and financial distress can be overwhelming, and it raises a crucial question – does insurance cover a stolen car? Understanding the types of coverage available and how they apply in case of theft can help you be better prepared for such unforeseen events. In this article, we will explore the various insurance coverages and how they protect you in the event of your car being stolen.

Types of Coverage

1. Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is the primary type of insurance that covers the theft of your vehicle. Often referred to as “other than collision” coverage, comprehensive insurance applies to damages caused by factors other than accidents, such as theft, vandalism, fire, or natural disasters. If you have comprehensive coverage included in your policy and your car gets stolen, your insurance company will reimburse you for the actual cash value (ACV) of the vehicle (minus your deductible).

2. Collision Coverage

Collision coverage comes into play when your car is damaged due to an accident with another vehicle or impact with an object like a tree or a fence. However, it does not cover theft.

3. Liability Coverage

Liability coverage protects you if you are legally responsible for damaging someone else’s property or causing injury to another person. It does not cover the theft of your car.

4. Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Protection

Uninsured motorist protection covers damages to your vehicle if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Underinsured motorist protection kicks in when the other driver’s insurance is not enough to cover the damages fully. Neither of these coverages applies to stolen cars.

5. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP covers medical expenses for both you and your passengers after an accident, irrespective of who was at fault. While PIP is valuable for accident-related expenses, it does not cover the theft of your vehicle.

What to Do If Your Car Is Stolen

1. Immediately report the theft to the local police and obtain a copy of the police report.

2. Notify your insurance company about the stolen car and provide them with the police report number.

3. Make sure you have all necessary documentation, such as registration and proof of insurance.

4. Keep records of any communication with the police or your insurance company in case of disputes.

Conclusion

Comprehensive coverage is the only type of car insurance that provides protection against vehicle theft. When purchasing insurance, it’s essential to consider adding comprehensive coverage to your policy if you want to safeguard yourself from potential financial losses in case your car is stolen. Always review your policy details and consult with an insurance agent or broker to ensure that you understand your coverage limits and exclusions fully.
