Could ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ get a sequel?

Spread the love

It’s been over two decades since ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding,’ the beloved romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett, hit the big screen. With its memorable characters and an ending that subverts traditional rom-com tropes, the film left a lasting impact on fans and the genre itself. So, is it possible that we might see a sequel to this cinema classic?

Let’s look at the indicators that could suggest a possibility for ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ to return with a second installment. Firstly, nostalgia for 90s films is at an all-time high, as demonstrated by recent revivals and sequels of other iconic franchises from that era. Audiences have shown a keen interest in revisiting stories and characters from decades past.

Secondly, the original cast has continued to express fondness for their time on the film. Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney have both been open about enjoying their roles and the experience of making the movie. This camaraderie could lead to increased interest in reprising their roles. Additionally, Rupert Everett’s scene-stealing performance is often cited as a highlight of the film, which might lure him back to explore his character further.

Behind the scenes, original writer Ronald Bass had mentioned in past interviews the possibility of revisiting the characters to see where their lives may have led after Julianne (Roberts) failed to break up the wedding of her best friend Michael (Mulroney) to the sweet but naive Kimmy (Diaz). The complex relationships between these characters could provide fertile ground for new storylines.

Moreover, there are thematic elements that could be explored in a contemporary context. The film’s ending was progressive for its time; Julianne doesn’t get her man and instead finds contentment in her platonic friendship with her best friend George (Everett). A sequel could expand on this theme by exploring different forms of love and relationships outside of traditional romantic bonds.

The practical considerations are equally important. A sequel would likely attract attention from studios looking to bank on recognizable titles with built-in fan bases. With streaming platforms constantly searching for exclusive content to draw subscribers, a sequel to ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ might be an appealing project.

However, any serious talk about a sequel would hinge on availability and interest from key players like Roberts and director P.J. Hogan. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding a sequel. But in Hollywood, never say never—especially when it comes to reuniting audiences with their favorite characters for another trip down memory lane or possibly even down the aisle.
