Choral Responses: Everything You Need to Know

Choral responses have become a necessity in the education field. Choral responses are used to teach a language and can be an effective tool. For instance, teachers often say, ‘repeat after me,’ this is a choral response. This method was a breakthrough for education and while it isn’t new, it has an important part to play. It’s a simple prompt that encourages the students to respond and learn more effectively.

So, what do you need to know about choral responses?

The Advantages of Choral Response in Education

You might not initially understand the importance of choral responses; however, they can be an excellent tool when teaching a new language. For example, students can say new words or expressions in a foreign language. They can speak as one and build confidence. It is not only useful for class lessons but one-on-one sessions too. Choral responses are simple prompts that will encourage a student to participate in class.

Teachers can often benefit from choral responses, too, because it builds engagement throughout the class. You do not have to approach each student or struggle to get the right answer, you give the student’s a clear direction, and they will follow. For example, you say, ‘repeat after me,’ and tell students how to greet someone in German. The students hear the word and say it; in time, the students gain more confidence. It’s a fantastic teaching method, to say the least.

Choral responses do not single students out. Teachers give out the prompts and encourage all students to speak at the same time. That removes the fear of being ridiculed and eases their concerns of being singled out. It’s the more effective way for students to retain the information.

When Should Choral Responses Be Used?

It is important, however, to use choral responses properly in a class. It’s on you to make sure every student is engaged with the class and responds when prompted. For instance, if only a handful of students respond, that’s more than half of the class not engaged. So, you need to use it effectively and grab the student’s attention. If you can hold their attention long enough, you can get them to participate and learn.

Choral responses can be effective when you want the class to learn a new phrase or word. Remember, they need to learn how to spell the words, learn the vocabulary, and use the syntax properly. So, you need to gain the attention of the class and speak the words and prompt the class to repeat the words.

  • Say the word twice and explain what it means.
  • Write the word on the board and get them to write it down.
  • Repeat the words and use the choral response to teach the students.
  • It’s important to be firm but not overbearing and use hand gestures to prompt the class.

Class Readings

Get the whole class to read a few lines or paragraphs. This will encourage everyone to learn the words and can be a great way to see if the students can pronounce the words. If you notice a few are having trouble, don’t single them out. Go over those words and have the class repeat them out loud a few times; it might help those struggling to grasp the word better.

The Genius of Choral Responses

There is little doubt that choral responses are important teaching tools. Whether you’re trying to teach a new language or have a class with multi-lingual students, the choral response method can be perfect. It is a useful way to help students pick up new words and learn a language effectively. Of course, you can’t spend hours using choral responses as the students can zone out; instead, try it for 5 or 10 minutes in each class.
